Student parents · tax year 2026-27
A lecture timetable is not a job — and the best money is often student finance, not HMRC.
GOV.UK’s childcare accounts are built for people in paid work. If you are in full-time higher education, the scheme that usually pays the nursery is the Childcare Grant from Student Finance, not Tax-Free Childcare. You may still claim Child Benefit, and you may still claim Universal Credit because you are responsible for a child — two facts a lot of student-parent advice gets backwards.

This page is for you if
- Full-time undergraduate parents in England who pay for approved childcare
- Student parents who were told they cannot get Universal Credit
- Part-time students who also have a paid job and might pass a work test
- Pregnant students trying to work out SMP versus Maternity Allowance versus student finance
Use a different page if
- You are on a taught postgraduate loan only and hoping for Parents’ Learning Allowance — that allowance is closed if you get a Postgraduate Loan
- You are a PGCE employee with a training salary — you may be a worker first; use the teacher page as well
The student-finance fork: Childcare Grant is not Tax-Free Childcare
If you are in full-time higher education (120 credits or more in the year on a single course) and you have a child under 15 — or under 17 with special educational needs — you may get a Childcare Grant. It does not have to be paid back. It is paid on top of other student finance.
Student Finance England currently pays 85% of childcare costs up to £199.62 a week for one child, or £342.24 a week for two or more (GOV.UK, checked 2026-08-14). Money goes through the Childcare Grant Payment Service. Your provider invoices the account. You cannot use the grant for deposits or other upfront costs, and leftover money at the end of the academic year goes back to Student Finance England.
Tax-Free Childcare and the working-parent 30 hours need paid work that meets a minimum earnings test. A full-time course does not satisfy that test on its own. If you also have a job that does, you then have to choose a path — you should not assume you can stack a Childcare Grant with a Tax-Free Childcare account.
Start with these, in this order
childcare grant
Childcare Grant (Student Finance England)
This is the student-parent scheme. It is not in the HMRC childcare account.
Do this. Apply through your student finance application. You must be eligible for student finance. Your provider is paid from the CCGPS account after the course starts, usually week by week.
Watch out. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own student-parent childcare support. An England Childcare Grant figure does not travel. You may have to repay an overpayment if your course or childcare changes.

Parents’ Learning Allowance
Help with the extra cost of studying while you have children — books, travel, extra course costs — not the nursery invoice.
Do this. Apply if you are in full-time higher education or on a 120-credit LLE year. It does not have to be paid back and GOV.UK says it will not affect benefits or tax credits.
Watch out. You cannot get it if you are getting a Postgraduate Loan. The amount depends on household income; we do not invent a maximum here — use the student finance calculator.

Universal Credit — the student-parent exception
Full-time students are usually barred from UC. Being responsible for a child is one of the listed exceptions.
Do this. Read GOV.UK’s ‘Universal Credit and students’. If you are responsible for a child, you may claim as a single person or as a couple. Student income is then taken into account on the UC award — the exception is not a full pass.
Watch out. A Childcare Grant is ignored for some income-related benefits, but student loans and grants are treated as income for Universal Credit. Do not assume the 85% UC childcare element and the Childcare Grant can be claimed for the same hours without checking both rules.

Child Benefit, whether or not you have a job
Student status does not block Child Benefit. The NI credits are often the most valuable part of the claim while you are not paying contributions.
Do this. Claim as soon as you are responsible for the child. Only one person can claim. If you are under the HICBC threshold — most students are — you simply receive the payments.
Watch out. If a partner who lives with you earns over £60,000, HICBC can still apply to them even though you are the student parent. The charge follows the higher adjusted net income in the couple.

Loans are not wages — except when Universal Credit says they are
Maintenance loans do not help you pass the minimum-earnings test for Free Childcare for Working Parents or Tax-Free Childcare. Those schemes want expected pay from work. The same loan can still reduce a Universal Credit award because student income is counted there. Treat ‘income’ as a word with three definitions: student finance, HMRC childcare, and DWP. Enter your paid hours separately from your loan in the calculator.
Mistakes we see on this path
- Applying for Tax-Free Childcare because a friend with a job uses it, then missing the Childcare Grant deadline.
- Believing full-time students can never claim Universal Credit — the child-in-the-household exception is on GOV.UK.
- Trying to pay a nursery deposit with a Childcare Grant. The grant cannot be used until the course has started, and it does not cover upfront costs.
- Assuming a partner’s full-time job automatically unlocks 30 hours while you only study. Both adults must meet the work test unless you are a single parent.
What to do next
1 Open the student finance extras, not the HMRC childcare account, if you are full-time HE
Childcare Grant and Parents’ Learning Allowance live on the student finance application. Reapply every academic year.
Read the official rule2 If you also have paid work, test the HMRC schemes as a worker
A regular job that meets the three-month minimum can open Tax-Free Childcare and funded hours. Then compare that path with the Childcare Grant. Do not run both blindly.
Open this step3 If someone told you students cannot get UC, read the exception list
Responsible for a child is enough to get past the usual full-time bar. What you then receive still depends on student income and the rest of the UC rules.

Questions for this situation
Does my student loan count as earnings for 30 hours?
No. GOV.UK’s minimum-earnings table is pay from work. Loans, grants and bursaries are not a substitute for that test. If you have no paid work, look at the Childcare Grant and the universal 15 hours for 3- and 4-year-olds in England.
Can I get the Childcare Grant and Tax-Free Childcare together?
Do not assume they stack. The Childcare Grant is student finance; Tax-Free Childcare is an HMRC working-parent account. If you qualify for both on paper, check each scheme’s rules and the calculator before you open an account you then have to unwind.
I am a full-time student with a baby. Can I claim Universal Credit?
GOV.UK lists ‘you’re responsible for a child’ as an exception to the usual ban on full-time students. You still have to meet the other UC conditions. Student income is taken into account.
What if I study in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?
The weekly Childcare Grant caps on this page are Student Finance England figures. The devolved student-finance bodies have their own childcare support. Use the local student-finance site, then come back to Child Benefit and UC, which are UK-wide.
