When do I apply for 30 hours childcare after my baby turns 9 months?

Which term do the hours start after my baby turns 9 months?

This is the England Free Childcare for Working Parents entitlement (often searched as 30 hours). GOV.UK says when you can get your hours from depends on the date the child turns 9 months. Check with the childcare provider for the exact start date they use.

Copied from GOV.UK Free Childcare for Working Parents: When to apply, checked 10 September 2026. Best Start in Life (updated 29 July 2026) publishes the same three start dates and apply-by dates. Do not add extra start dates. Ask the provider for their term date if it is not exactly 1 January, 1 April or 1 September.

Best Start in Life uses the same three windows and says the deadline is the day before the new term begins. That site also says you can apply for the code up to 16 weeks before the baby turns 9 months. GOV.UK’s matching line is: you can apply from when the child is 23 weeks old.

How do I apply once the 23-week window opens?

Apply on the GOV.UK working-parent service if you live in England. HMRC also checks Tax-Free Childcare in the same application. You set up one childcare account. GOV.UK says it usually takes 20 minutes.

  1. Place the birth date on the official table Find the 9-month window, the earliest hours start (1 January, 1 April or 1 September) and the apply-by date. There are no extra official start dates on that table.
  2. Wait until 23 weeks (or the 16-week-before-9-months window) GOV.UK: apply from 23 weeks old. Best Start in Life: apply up to 16 weeks before 9 months. Those two lines describe the same early window.
  3. Gather what the apply page lists National Insurance numbers (and a UTR if self-employed), the child’s UK birth-certificate reference if you have one, and the date you started or are due to start work. Include a partner if you are married or in a civil partnership and live together, or if you live together as though you are.
  4. Apply and take the 11-digit code to the provider If the application is approved, GOV.UK and Best Start in Life both describe an 11-digit code. The provider also needs your National Insurance number and the child’s date of birth. A code is not a reserved place — contact the provider early.
  5. Reconfirm every three months GOV.UK and Best Start in Life both say you must confirm details every three months, including before the hours have started. Best Start in Life says HMRC sends reminders. Missing a reconfirmation can put the place into a grace period — ask the provider.

Does returning from maternity leave change the apply-by date?

It can. GOV.UK publishes a second table if you are returning to work after maternity, paternity, shared parental or adoption leave. Paid annual leave on salary counts as having returned. The 23-week / 9-month rule still applies; the return-to-work date changes when you can apply and when hours can start.

Shared parental leave for the child you are applying for has a further GOV.UK rule: both parents must have returned or be returning by 30 September, 31 January or 30 April depending on the term.

Is this the same 30 hours in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

No. The apply service and the 9-month term table on GOV.UK are for England. The eligibility page says the working-parent offer is 30 hours a week for 38 weeks of the year for a child aged 9 months to 4 years, if the other work, income and immigration tests are met.

Foster carers cannot use the online application; GOV.UK and Best Start in Life both send that route through the social worker and local authority. You and a partner cannot both hold a code for the same child.

In shortIn short: put the 9-month birthday on the GOV.UK table, apply from 23 weeks, meet the apply-by date for that term, then hand the 11-digit code to the provider and reconfirm every three months. Hours start 1 January, 1 April or 1 September — not the day the child turns 9 months.

Questions parents ask

Can I apply the week my baby turns 9 months?
You can apply earlier. GOV.UK allows an application from 23 weeks old. Hours still start the term after 9 months, not on the 9-month birthday. Missing the 31 December, 31 March or 31 August apply-by date pushes you to the next term on that table.
Is 16 weeks before 9 months a different rule from 23 weeks?
Best Start in Life says you can apply up to 16 weeks before the baby turns 9 months. GOV.UK says from 23 weeks old. Those are two official descriptions of the same early window, not a second start date for the hours.
Do I reconfirm before the hours have started?
Yes. Best Start in Life says you need to reconfirm every three months even if you have not yet started using the entitlement. GOV.UK says to confirm details every three months for Free Childcare for Working Parents.
I am still on maternity leave. Can I apply?
The eligibility page lists maternity leave among the situations where you can usually still qualify if you are working or on leave. The when-to-apply page then uses the return-to-work table if you are coming back after maternity, paternity, shared parental or adoption leave. Read both, then apply on GOV.UK.
