What is the difference between live view, an SD card and cloud?

Retail listings collapse three features into one word: 'recording'. They are not the same product.

BabyMonitorHQ's own FAQ on that 2026 Wi-Fi round-up says you do not pay a monthly fee for basic app features on the models they discuss, and that some cameras can record to an SD card without a subscription. That is a competitor FAQ, not a price list. Open the listing for the exact SKU in your basket.

What does Maxi-Cosi See list for SD versus cloud?

The job's starting example is a UK travel-system brand's Wi-Fi camera, not a generic 'all monitors'. Maxi-Cosi See's UK product page (checked via the published feature list on 10 September 2026) names both routes:

• Optional video recording and photos.
• Possibility to use an SD card (not included).
• Optional cloud storage in the app (with subscription). The support copy says you add the camera to the Maxi-Cosi Connected Home app, then buy 'Cloud Storage for Cameras' from the Featured page. Uploaded clips are for in-app playback; that copy also says you cannot download videos you have uploaded.

A US Maxi-Cosi consumer-care article describes two cloud modes — 7-day event recording (motion or noise) and 7-day continuous recording — billed monthly or yearly. Treat that as the maker's plan shape, not a UK pound figure. Open the UK app store listing or the in-app paywall for the live price; MayTally is not reprinting one.

How do I read a model's storage card before I pay?

   Separate the parent unit from the app A dedicated screen can show live video with no cloud account. An app can show live video with no saved history. Ask 'where do yesterday's clips live?' not 'does it have Wi-Fi?'.

   Find the card slot line Look for microSD, max GB, and 'sold separately'. If the box is silent, the PDF manual's specification table is the next place. No slot usually means you cannot add local recording later.

   Open the in-app storage screen This is where event versus continuous, retention days, and the current subscription sit. Screenshot it. Do not rely on a 2024 blog that named a price.

   Read what happens when you cancel Some plans keep live view and drop history. Some lock advanced alerts behind the same paywall. The cancellation paragraph in the app's terms is the source, not a forum guess.

   Note who can see the library Shared-family logins, download buttons, and 'cannot download cloud clips' (Maxi-Cosi's published line) change whether footage can leave that household.

A local SD card can still be read if someone takes the camera. Cloud clips sit on a third-party server. Neither option is a product-safety all-clear, and neither replaces a recall check on the hardware.

What does the ICO say once the camera is on the internet?

The ICO Children's Code standard on connected toys and devices applies to products that collect personal data and transmit it over a network. A camera or microphone in a child's room is exactly the class of sensor the code flags.

• If the device only stores data on itself and never sends it, the ICO says that standard does not apply to the maker in the same way — they do not have access to the personal data.
• If clips go to the maker's servers, the code expects clear information before set-up, a way to see that recording is happening, and a practicable 'connection off' so the gadget can be used without the network where that is possible.
• The code also tells providers to mitigate unauthorised access — including someone taking over a microphone.

That is a data-protection standard for the company, not a MayTally ranking of brands. It is the official reason 'SD versus cloud' is not only a convenience question.

Does a local SD card mean the footage stays private?

It means the default library is in the room, not in a data centre. It does not mean the camera has no Wi-Fi radio, no firmware account, or no path for a previous owner's login. Factory-reset and account handover are a separate second-hand check.

The Lullaby Trust still says a monitor does not replace room-sharing for the first six months and does not prevent SIDS. Storage format does not change that.

Is this the same choice as DECT versus Wi-Fi?

No. DECT or a closed parent-unit link is about how the picture or sound travels across the house. Cloud versus SD is about whether yesterday's file is stored, and where.
