What does both-ends-battery actually mean?

It means two rechargeable (or primary-cell) packs: one in the baby unit and one in the parent unit. A cordless handset plus a camera that dies when you pull the wall lead is not both-ends-battery. Which? states the usual UK split: battery parent unit, baby unit either battery or mains.

This page is a how-to for reading specs. It is not a best-of list and it is not the “no broadband” question.

How do I read a UK listing without being misled?

   Find two power sentences One for the baby unit, one for the parent unit. Philips-style tables that say “baby unit: mains only” fail the test immediately, even if the handset claims 10–12 hours.

   Note the charge connector on each end USB-C on both (Babymoov YOO Go+ ships two USB-C cables and no wall brick) is a different travel kit from a barrel 5V/6V camera adaptor plus a USB handset.

   Write down night-vision hours, not only “up to” hours eufy E21’s UK FAQ: about 9 hours on the 5,000mAh camera, about 5.5 hours with night vision. If only one number is printed, ask which mode it is.

   Separate VOX from camera runtime Voice-activated screens save the parent-unit cell (Babymoov and Kinderkraft both advertise VOX). That does not charge the camera. A quiet night can still flatten a battery camera that is streaming infrared the whole time.

   Confirm you are not looking at AA backup Replaceable cells in the camera are a third design. They can be both-ends-battery in a literal sense, but the overnight number is then “how many fresh AAs”, not a lithium charge cycle.

Official records from Which? show parents’ battery expectations often exceed tested parent-unit life. That survey was about handsets. A battery camera has its own, usually shorter, night-vision figure.

Why do USB-C and night-vision hours matter together?

A barrel adaptor ties you to that brand’s wall brick. USB-C lets you top up from a power bank or a laptop — still only if the voltage and current match the printed camera spec. Babymoov’s YOO Go+ page says the kit includes USB-C leads and no charger, on the basis you already own a brick. Kinderkraft NiteEye Travel lists two USB-C cables and two charging plugs, camera pack 2,000mAh, monitor pack 3,200mAh.

Night vision is the overnight mode for a video camera. Infrared LEDs are why eufy’s published camera time drops from about 9 hours to about 5.5. Which? (2019) found video parent units averaged about seven hours in its tests versus 13.5 hours for audio — a reminder that a bright screen plus a night-vision camera is two drains, not one.

Which UK pages actually state packs in both units?

These are examples of wording, not picks. Always re-read the live spec: firmware and SKUs change.

• Babymoov YOO Go+ (UK). “Parent Unit: rechargeable lithium battery (USB-C cable included). Baby unit: rechargeable lithium battery (USB-C cable included).” The page also describes VOX / Sleep technology on the screen.
• Kinderkraft NiteEye Travel (UK). Camera battery 2,000mAh, monitor battery 3,200mAh; USB-C ×2; works without Wi-Fi. The page describes VOX and night vision. It also shows the camera on a pram or travel-cot frame — still keep cables out of any sleep space.
• eufy E21 (UK, product code e8354121). The camera is a 5,000mAh pack that can run plugged or unplugged; the FAQ gives the 9-hour / 5.5-hour night-vision split. The kit also includes a 5-inch parent monitor and an app. Confirm on the live page that the monitor is rechargeable if you need both dedicated ends off-grid — a battery camera plus a mains-only screen is not both-ends-battery.
• Hubble Go Baby (UK). Hubble’s page describes a rechargeable portable camera and a 5-inch HD parent unit. Again, read both power lines before treating it as both-ends-battery.

Philips Avent SCD843/05 and SCD833/05 remain useful counter-examples: parent unit battery-and-mains, baby unit mains-only. They will keep appearing in “battery monitor” search results because the handset is cordless.

What did Which? find about battery life?

In August 2019 Which? asked 1,360 parents and compared answers with its lab figures. Average expectation was 13 hours. Tested parent units averaged under 10 hours; video averaged about seven; the shortest handset died in under three hours and the longest ran nearly 27. Price did not track life. Those numbers are parent-unit results. They still matter because a both-ends kit can fail from either end.

In shortIn short: demand a written power line for the camera and for the handset, plus night-vision hours and the charge connector on each end. USB-C on both is a travel clue, not proof of a full night. This is a checklist, not a ranking.

Does a cordless camera change how my baby should sleep?

No. NHS advice for the first six months is a cot or Moses basket, baby on their back, in the same room as you. The Lullaby Trust says there is no research showing monitors help prevent SIDS, and that a monitor cannot replace that supervision. A battery camera removes one trailing wall lead; any charge cable you do use still has to stay out of reach.

If you clip a travel camera to a pram or travel cot, that is a daytime viewing choice. It does not make a pram a sleep space. Movement monitors are a different product — the Lullaby Trust warns they can pick up vibration in a vehicle or pram and give false reassurance.
