Why do UK notices talk about swaddles as sleep products?

OPSS files some wraps, knitted “swaddle beds” and hooded winter bags under baby sleeping products, not under a separate cloth-swaddle heading. If a listing says swaddle, cocoon, wrap sleeping bag or knitted bed, search it as a sleep product. The Lullaby Trust’s sleep-product page is about choosing items for a clear, flat cot — it is not a brand verdict on any one wrap.

This page is only the records check: label, seller, GOV.UK match. It is not a guide to when a family stops swaddling, and it does not grade wrapping technique.

Official records in 2025 name at least two swaddle-style sleep products with a hood and no arm openings. Those design features are the hazard lines on the notices, not a MayTally judgement.

How do I search a used swaddle on GOV.UK?

Second-hand wraps often have a faded sewn-in tag or only a marketplace title. Collect every identifier before you type.

   Search the official UK list first Open Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls. Try the product name, then the seller, then the words “swaddle wrap”, “knitted swaddle” and “sleeping bag with hood”.

   Read the notice type A product recall from end users usually tells owners to stop using the item and names a contact. A product safety report may say the item was withdrawn from the market and still describe the hazard. Read the corrective-action line, not only the headline.

Which 2025 OPSS reports name swaddle-style sleep products?

These two reports do not list every wrap sold in Britain. They are starting points when a used item looks like a hooded winter wrap or a knitted swaddle bed. A different seller and a different knit still need their own search.

What if the page says “product safety report”, not “recall”?

OPSS uses more than one heading. For the winter wrap, the measure is withdrawal by the named distributor. For the knitted swaddle bed, the page says the product is no longer available for sale and tells owners to stop using it and contact the distributor they purchased from. Neither heading means “fine to pass on to another mum”.

• Gifted wrap with a named seller. If the invoice or Instagram shop matches Rose and Co Lifestyle or Teenybumps.co.uk, compare the product description and image on the notice PDF with the item in daylight.
• Marketplace title only. Search the exact listing title plus “OPSS” and the GOV.UK keyword box. Which? has separately reported hooded bags reappearing on marketplaces after takedowns — a removed listing can return under a new shop name.
• Cloth swaddle without a hood. A simple cotton wrap still gets a GOV.UK search by brand. Absence from the two 2025 reports is no recall on file for those PSD numbers, not a pass.

If nothing comes up, have I finished the check?

No listing means no recall on file. The Lullaby Trust still asks you to look for the relevant British Standard on sleep products, to keep the cot clear, and to put baby on their back on a firm, flat surface. A British Standard is not a SIDS standard — that is the charity’s wording.

OPSS’s baby-sleep campaign poster line for sleeping bags is: arm holes and no hood, and a fit that does not let the baby slip down. Use that as a visual screen on a used wrap sold for sleep, then still run the database search.

What should I ask the person who passed the swaddle on?
