Where do batch and serial numbers sit on a UK car seat?

Notices on the GOV.UK Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls list match a batch, serial, item reference, barcode or SKU — not a marketing colour name. Photograph the plastic shell, not only the fabric tag. Several official records say the matching code is on the underside of the seat or base.

The orange approval label (R44 or R129) is for type-approval, not the same as a batch or serial. Copy both. Decoding R129 versus R44 is a different check.

Which codes do UK notices actually ask for?

Each notice lists the fields it will accept. Copy every string on the label, then pick the ones the notice names. A seat can have a model name that matches and still sit outside the batch.

• Batch or lot. Often a short letter-number group. The Nyala notice says only batches 211X and 223X (production March 2023 to May 2023) are affected, and that a different batch needs no action on that notice.
• Item reference / article code. A long number the factory uses. The FamilyFix Slide Pro notice matches 8065057110, not the carrier name you clip onto the base.
• Serial number. A unique or range-based code. Puggle lists three serials; Recaro Zero.1 listed ranges such as KS01022139 to KS01024461.
• Barcode (EAN/GTIN) and retailer SKU. Useful when the shell type is sold under a shop brand. Halfords published both barcodes and SKUs on the Nyala record.

How do I copy the codes so a search will match?

Type what is on the plastic, including leading zeros and letter prefixes. Do not tidy a code into a shop listing title.

   Photograph every label Underside of the seat, underside of any Isofix base, barcode on the box, and the orange approval label. One photo per label, in focus.

   Write the strings exactly Batch, serial, item reference, barcode and SKU as printed. Keep spaces and hyphens if they appear. Note any manufacture or production date next to the code.

   Search GOV.UK with the model and one code On the OPSS list, try the brand plus model, then the batch or item reference on its own. Open the notice and compare your photo to the Product information table.

   Use a maker checker only if the notice names it Some notices send you to a brand tool with a serial or ref field. That tool answers that notice. It does not replace a search of the official list.

What if the underside label is missing or unreadable?

Without a batch or serial you cannot prove a notice does not apply. The box barcode can still match a published EAN, but many notices also need the shell code. A painted-over or peeled underside label is a reason to stop the check and not to treat the seat as cleared.

Official records show a recall against named batches or serials. No match on file is not proof the product is fine — it only means that notice does not list your code.

What should I search once I have the codes?

Search the GOV.UK list first. Then open any manufacturer page the notice links. Child Car Seats (childcarseats.org.uk) also republishes selected current notices with the same codes. A news story that names only the brand is not the matching table.

Is this the same as reading the orange R129 or R44 label?

No. The orange label tells you the approval type and the height or weight range the seat was approved for. A recall check needs the production identifiers — batch, serial, item reference — which usually sit on a second sticker on the underside. Keep both photos. This page does not decode R129 or advise on expiry.
