Does Asda or Tesco delivery make nappies dearer per nappy than Aldi in store?
How do I put a delivery fee onto pence per nappy?
Deal pages compare shelf pence. The paid amount is shelf total plus the slot (or the extra lines you added only to clear a free-delivery minimum). GOV.UK Price Marking Order guidance still treats a nappy unit price as the price of one item. After delivery, that item’s true pence is a household sum, not the app’s £/each.
- Write down the nappies you needed Count only the packs you would have bought in store this week — same size, same style. That count is the divisor.
- Add the checkout extras that exist because of the van Slot fee, small-basket charge, and any extra grocery lines you added only to pass a minimum. Do not invent a slot — read the fee Tesco or Asda shows for your postcode and time.
- Split the extras If the shop is a full weekly basket, allocate a fair share of the fee to the nappy lines (nappy spend ÷ basket × fee). If the order exists only to get nappies, put the whole fee on those nappies.
- Divide by the nappies you needed (nappy spend + allocated extras) ÷ nappy count. Compare that pence with the Aldi in-store ticket for the same size.
Slot prices change by postcode and time of day. This page does not quote a current Tesco or Asda van fee. The checkout line is the source for that week.
What do Tesco and Asda publish about minimums and passes?

Why is Aldi in store the comparison, not Aldi online?
Aldi’s product pages, including Mamia nappies and the size 6+ pack, print this disclaimer: prices online may vary from prices in store. Which? own-brand size 4 sat near 6p in 2023–24. The 10 September 2026 Mamia page listed size 4 jumbo at £4.89 / 6p and size 6+ at £5.38 / 11p. Those are online-listed figures, not a promise that every store matches them.
The fair “Aldi in store” side of the question is the shelf ticket in your local Aldi for the same size, divided by the pack count. Bring that pence to the Tesco or Asda sum after fees.
What does a worked van-versus-Aldi sum look like?
Use letters, not a made-up slot. Suppose you need two Tesco Fred & Flo size 4 jumbo bags (84 + 84) at the 10 September 2026 listing of £4.99 each, so nappy spend is £9.98. Aldi’s matching size 4 jumbo listed £4.89 each, so two bags in store are £9.78 before you leave the house.

A £5 Tesco small-basket charge on 168 nappies is about 3p each before any slot. That can wipe an own-brand pence gap that looked tiny on the shelf. A full weekly shop that was happening anyway can put the same £5 (or a waived Delivery Saver slot) across a much larger basket, so the nappy-only pence looks different.
Is Click and Collect a different pence from the van?
Yes, because the extras differ. Tesco’s help page sets Click+Collect at a £25 basket before the £5 small-basket charge, and delivery at £50. Asda’s Click & Collect page states a £25 minimum or a £3 charge below that. Collection still has a time cost, but it is not a van slot. Which? nappy pence tables do not include either extra — they are shelf averages.
- If you already walk past the collect point, collection extras are the only add-on.
- If you take a car only for that collect, fuel sits outside the supermarket ticket but still sits in the household total.
- A Delivery Saver or Asda Delivery Pass is worth allocating per shop it covers, not per nappy, unless nappies were the only reason you kept the pass.
In short, does the van make Tesco or Asda dearer than Aldi?
In shortIt can, when the order exists to move nappies and a slot or small-basket charge lands on a small count. Tesco’s £5 under-£50 delivery charge and Asda’s published £40 / £25 thresholds are the official extras to add. Aldi says online prices may differ from store — compare with the in-store ticket. Questions parents ask
- Should I add the whole weekly shop fee to the nappies?
- Only if the van exists for the nappies. If the shop was a full weekly basket, allocate a share of the fee (nappy spend ÷ basket × fee). Putting the whole slot on one 48-pack overstates the pence.
- Does Delivery Saver make Tesco pence match Aldi?
- It can remove the slot on covered days if the basket stays above Tesco’s threshold. The monthly plan cost remains. Aldi’s in-store ticket is still the other side of the sum. Tesco’s page is not a promise that own-brand pence will match Mamia.
- Why do you not list this week’s Tesco slot prices?
- They vary by postcode and time. Quoting one slot would invent a rate for everyone else. The checkout line is the figure to put in F.
- Does Aldi charge for delivery on nappies?
- Aldi’s nappy product pages are written around store stock and state that online prices may vary from store. Use the local Aldi shelf as the in-store side of this comparison.
