What did Which? say a security camera is missing?

Which? published Why you shouldn't use a security camera as a baby monitor on 29 January 2026. The piece is about fit for watching a sleeping baby, not a laboratory certificate. It listed five gaps from Which? testing. Budget indoor cameras are still sold as dual-purpose 'pet and baby' gadgets; the feature list is the same either way.

The first five rows paraphrase Which?, 29 January 2026 (checked 10 September 2026). The last row is the extra gap UK parents search for — a parent unit and VOX — and is not a Which? test score. Prices move; Which? mentioned cheap Best Buy security cameras from about £20 and dedicated smart monitors often over £100 in that article.

A missing lullaby or a wide lens is a feature gap. It is not a finding that one box is fine to put over a cot and another is not. MayTally does not issue that verdict.

Why do parents still want a parent unit, VOX and night audio?

A security-camera app assumes the phone is free, charged and allowed to interrupt. A dedicated parent unit is a second radio or a second screen whose only job is the nursery. VOX (sound-activated mode) lets that unit sleep until the baby unit crosses a volume line — see VOX and white noise. Night audio without unlocking a phone matters when you are settling a toddler in the next room and cannot stare at a push notification.

Some smart baby monitors now include both an app and a parent unit. That is still a nursery product with those extras, not a hallway CCTV camera with a new name. Which? noted you could later reuse a smart monitor as an indoor camera; the reverse — starting with CCTV — is the gap the January 2026 piece described.

Does NCSC treat security cameras and baby monitors differently?

No. NCSC's page 'Smart' security cameras: using them safely in your home is written for security cameras and baby monitors on home Wi-Fi. The issue it names is remote access plus a default password that is well known (examples it gives include admin or 00000), which can let someone open the live feed.

Change the default password NCSC suggests three random words, set in the camera app. Avoid the common-password lists criminals already have.
Install updates and turn on automatic updates if offered Look for firmware or software in the app. From 29 April 2024, PSTI also requires a published security-update end date on new connectable products.
Switch off remote viewing if you do not need it NCSC says to disable internet viewing if you do not need it, and warns that this can also stop movement alerts and smart-speaker links.
Review UPnP and port forwarding on the router NCSC asks you to consider disabling both, and notes that some games and media servers then stop working. Follow the router maker's own help — do not open inbound ports 'to make the camera work'.

What should I read on a sub-£30 Wi-Fi camera listing?

Look past the nursery lifestyle photo. Check whether there is a parent unit, a temperature line, a VOX / sound activation line, and a PSTI support end date. Check whether night vision is infra-red (black-and-white, no glow that keeps a baby up) or a white floodlight. Check whether the app is from a named UK or EU support desk you can email when the listing disappears.

Is a dedicated baby monitor the 'safer' choice?

That sentence is the one this site is not allowed to write. Which? argued a security camera is a poor substitute because of the feature list above. NCSC gives the same cyber steps for both product types. The Lullaby Trust's position is that any monitor is not a substitute for a parent or carer, with no evidence that monitors prevent SIDS, and that you stay in the same room for the first six months.

If your baby was born early or has a medical condition, ask the clinical team what monitoring, if any, they want you to use before you mount any camera.
