When does Universal Credit pay back holiday club fees?
Are holiday clubs eligible on Universal Credit?
GOV.UK lists holiday clubs with after-school clubs and breakfast clubs at the top of the childcare-costs page. Best Start in Life repeats the same list. Eligibility still turns on a registered provider — usually Ofsted in England, the Care Inspectorate in Scotland or Care Inspectorate Wales.
An unregistered holiday play scheme is not something MayTally can stretch into a claim. If the club cannot give you a registration number, treat that as a reporting problem before you pay a lump invoice.
GOV.UK: you have to pay for the childcare yourself, then report it. The money is paid back after the childcare actually happens — including holiday-club weeks.
When does the money come back after I pay a lump invoice?
Universal Credit is calculated in monthly assessment periods, then paid about 7 days after that period ends. A club that invoices the whole Easter week on one day does not create a same-day extra payment. Timing follows two GOV.UK rules: report as soon as you pay, and the amount is paid back after the care happens.

| What you did | What GOV.UK says about timing | What that means for a lump club invoice |
|---|---|---|
| You pay after the club week has already run | Costs paid after the care is provided are usually paid back in the same assessment period that you report them | Report the payment in that period (or the next). The repayment waits for the period that includes the report, not the day you tap the card |
| You pay before the club week (deposit or full invoice) | You can report up to 3 assessment periods of future costs if you have already paid and have proof. Those costs are paid back over the periods they apply to, not as one lump sum | A March invoice for an August week is not one fat repayment in March |
| You report later than the period after you paid | If you report after the assessment period you paid in, or the one after, you might not be repaid | A forgotten Easter receipt in September is the late-report risk, not a new holiday-club rule |
What if I pay the whole Easter or summer week before it starts?
That is the cashflow squeeze this page is for. Many clubs want the week in one go. GOV.UK still says the childcare amount is paid back after the childcare actually happens, and prepaid future costs are spread across the assessment periods those days fall in.
- Keep the invoice that shows the dates of childcare, the amount, and the date you paid — GOV.UK asks for all three.
- Report the payment as soon as it leaves your account, even if the club week is weeks away.
- Do not expect the full week back in the payment that follows the paying period if the club days sit in a later assessment period.
- If the prepaid stretch covers more than three assessment periods, GOV.UK only describes claiming up to 3 future periods at a time.
This is a timing page, not a Tax-Free Childcare comparison. You cannot use Tax-Free Childcare while you are on Universal Credit. Holiday-club eligibility here is the registered-provider rule on GOV.UK.
How do I report a one-off holiday club fee?
- Confirm the club is registered Get the provider name, registration number, address and phone number, plus your child’s name and the type of care (holiday club). GOV.UK says you only need this pack once per provider.
- Pay, then report the same day if you can Report in your online Universal Credit account as soon as the payment is made. The deadline is the assessment period you paid in, or the one after.
- Upload proof of the payment A paid invoice that shows dates of care, amount and payment date is enough on its own. Otherwise combine a bank statement with the club’s invoice or receipt.
- Read the next statement before you chase Payment is about 7 days after the assessment period ends. The holiday-club line sits inside the total Universal Credit payment, not as a separate club refund.
What proof does GOV.UK ask for on a club week?
The evidence list is the same as for a nursery or childminder. There is no lighter holiday-club version.
- Provider identity and registration — once per club.
- Dates the child actually attended (or was booked for) that week.
- How much you paid and the date you paid it.
In shortA registered holiday club can go on a Universal Credit childcare report. You pay, you report when you pay, and the amount comes back after the week happens — spread across assessment periods if you paid in advance. A lump invoice is not a lump repayment on the day you pay.
Questions parents ask
- Does Universal Credit pay the club directly?
- No. GOV.UK says you pay the provider yourself, then report the cost. The childcare amount is included in your total Universal Credit payment after the care happens.
- The club is run by the school. Is that enough?
- Only if it is registered childcare in the sense GOV.UK uses — usually Ofsted or the relevant Care Inspectorate. Ask the school for the registration number before you treat the week as reportable.
- Can I report last summer’s club in this assessment period?
- GOV.UK says you must report in the assessment period you paid, or the one after. A fee paid in July and reported in September is outside that window unless DWP accepts a late report for special circumstances (LITRG notes that possibility; it is not automatic).
- Is this about Tax-Free Childcare for holiday clubs?
- No. This page is only Universal Credit timing. GOV.UK says you cannot get Tax-Free Childcare if you are on Universal Credit.
