How to use a manufacturer car seat recall checker in the UK
What is a manufacturer recall checker, and what is it not?
A brand checker is a form on the maker’s site. You type a serial, item reference or manufacture date from the seat or base. The script answers that maker’s current notice. It is not the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) list, and it is not a test of the seat in your car.
Official records show a GOV.UK product recall when OPSS publishes one. A brand page that says the serial is outside a campaign is not the same as “no UK recall on file”, and neither line is a safety verdict.

How do I run the brand tool without treating it as a verdict?
- Open the URL on the GOV.UK notice Prefer the link in the official corrective-action paragraph. The Britax BABY-SAFE 5Z / 5Z2 record (2403-0229) names https://www.baby-safe-check.com. The FamilyFix Slide Pro record names Maxi-Cosi’s checker and John Lewis recalls.
- Type the field the form labels Serial, Ref, Date or batch — as printed. Do not paste a shop SKU into a serial box unless the form asks for that SKU.
- Read the result as a match for that notice Affected: follow the notice (stop using, then the named contact or replacement route). Not affected: that campaign does not list your code. It is not an all-clear for other notices.
- Search the same codes on GOV.UK Use the Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls keyword box. A second brand or a widened batch can appear here first.
- Search DVSA for child car seats as parts The DVSA recall checker includes child car seats under parts or accessories. You need the manufacturer and model. It is a second official list, not a brand microsite.
If the checker says the seat is not affected, can I stop there?
No. A not-affected screen answers one form. Recaro’s 2017 Zero.1 tool was the route Which? named for that lot; that URL is not a standing UK database. Britax’s checker covers named 5Z / 5Z2 serials, not every Britax seat. Maxi-Cosi’s FamilyFix form matches that base campaign.
OPSS also publishes product safety reports and alerts, which are not always wired into a brand serial box. Search the official list even when the brand screen is green.
What if the manufacturer checker is offline?
Use the Product information table on the GOV.UK notice: compare your photo to the listed serials, batches, refs and dates. Email the UK contact on the notice (for Britax Römer, [email protected] appears on the UK safety-notices page). Trading-standards copies of older Recaro notices still list the underside serial instruction even if the old web tool has gone.

Questions parents ask
- Do I use the Britax US site or baby-safe-check.com?
- For the UK OPSS record on BABY-SAFE 5Z and 5Z2 (2403-0229), the official notice names https://www.baby-safe-check.com. Britax Römer’s UK safety-notices page repeats that URL. Do not follow a US NHTSA-style flow as the UK method.
- Maxi-Cosi asked for a Ref and a Date, not a serial. Is that wrong?
- That is what Which? reports for the FamilyFix Slide Pro checker, and it matches the OPSS item-reference plus manufacture-date table. Type those two fields. Still keep a photo of any serial on the same label.
- Is DVSA the same as OPSS?
- No. OPSS publishes consumer product recalls, reports and alerts. DVSA’s checker is the vehicle, part and accessory list and it explicitly includes child car seats. Search both when you have a manufacturer and model.
- The brand tool offered a replacement form. Does that mean GOV.UK is optional?
- Use the remedy the matching notice describes. Still keep the OPSS page: it is the UK publication, and later updates land there.
