Why do official pages keep mentioning the missing booklet?

RoSPA says second-hand seats very often arrive without instructions, which makes it harder to be sure you are fitting and using the seat correctly. Which? lists the same gap: booklets get lost, and a seat without instructions raises the chance of a wrong fit. The Lullaby Trust's second-hand checklist starts with instructions, and adds that you can usually download them from the manufacturer.

Which?'s car-seat experts also say some makers now only provide online manuals, reached by a web link or QR code on a slip of paper — so hold onto that slip if it is all you have. A random PDF from a seller's chat is not the same as the file on the brand's own site.

Where do I find the model name before I search?

The download only works if you search the model the seat actually is, not the nickname on a Marketplace title. Look on the plastic shell, under the cover, on a sticker on the back or base, and on any remaining swing tag. Photograph every label in daylight.

The model label is missing — can I still guess the seat?

No. Fabric colour and a side-impact wing are not a model. Without a readable brand-and-model identifier you cannot fetch the right PDF, you cannot check the maker's age advice, and you cannot search GOV.UK recalls against a real product name. Stop at that fact. RoSPA's list already treats missing instructions as a reason not to accept the seat; a missing identity is the same stop, one step earlier.

Do not try to recover the model by reading an orange approval label as if it were a catalogue. That is a different job. If the only sticker left is damaged, you still do not have a model name you can type into a manuals page.

What should I do with the PDF once I have it?

• Belt path or Isofix steps for your installation mode — follow those diagrams, not a memory of the previous owner's car.
• Your child's height or weight range — RoSPA: the seat must suit the child you will put in it.
• Whether a support leg, top tether or insert is required — a used seat with those parts missing is incomplete.

• How to store the paper or file — Which? says keep the manual for the next sibling or the next car.

The seller says they fitted it without a booklet. Does that count?
