Will a Wi-Fi baby monitor work on a 4G or 5G home hub?

Is a 4G home hub the same as having no internet?

No. A Three, EE, Vodafone or similar home hub is a router that makes Wi-Fi from a mobile signal. GOV.UK's Project Gigabit explainer lists fixed wireless access (FWA), including 4G and 5G, as a way to connect a premises without a fibre or copper line. You still have an SSID, a password and a 2.4 GHz band — the things a Wi-Fi camera actually joins.

That is a different problem from a house with no broadband at all, where a non-Wi-Fi video or audio set is the usual path. This page is for homes that already have a 4G or 5G hub, or a phone hotspot, and want to know whether the camera's app will come up.

New-build and rural addresses often land on a mobile hub while they wait for fibre. Check GOV.UK's gigabit availability tool (England and Wales) and Ofcom's coverage checker for what is planned — the hub in the hall is still "internet" for a camera.

Will a 2.4 GHz-only camera join a 4G or 5G hub?

Usually yes, if the hub broadcasts a 2.4 GHz name the camera can see. 5G home hubs still use ordinary Wi-Fi inside the house; "5G" is the radio from the mast to the hub, not the band the camera must join. The same 2.4 GHz trap as on BT or Virgin applies: a combined SSID that hides 2.4 GHz will leave the camera scanning forever.

Open the hub's Wi-Fi page and confirm a 2.4 GHz SSID is on. If the hub offers a guest name, the same isolation rules as on fibre apply: the camera can often still reach a cloud app, but a parent screen that needs the LAN may not.

Why does remote viewing fail on mobile broadband?

Most UK mobile broadband shares a public IPv4 address among many customers. That setup is called carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). A camera or games console that waits for an inbound connection from the internet never receives it, because there is no unique public address to aim at. Port-forward menus on the hub then do nothing useful. The NCSC, separately, asks households to consider disabling UPnP and port forwarding on routers anyway — so opening ports is the wrong fix even when the line is fibre.

CGNAT is a network design used on many UK mobile broadband services. Individual APNs and business SIMs differ. This table is a field check, not a carrier scorecard.

How do I test a home hub versus a phone hotspot?

  1. Join the hub's 2.4 GHz name Factory-reset the camera if it is still bound to an old fibre SSID. Put the phone on the same 2.4 GHz name and complete the app pairing.
  2. Watch live view on the hub Wi-Fi Walk to another room. If the picture holds, the camera is happy on that SSID. Congestion and signal are ordinary Wi-Fi problems, not "4G-specific" ones.
  3. Watch live view on mobile data Turn the phone's Wi-Fi off. If the app still opens the nursery, the camera is using an outbound cloud path. If it spins, the model may be waiting for an inbound connection that CGNAT will not deliver.
  4. Hotspot as a 10-minute test only If you have no hub yet, a phone hotspot can prove the camera powers on and joins 2.4 GHz. Disable battery saver, keep the phone plugged in, and do not treat this as overnight nursery infrastructure — the hotspot will sleep or move.
  5. Do not add port-forward rules to "fix" remote view On CGNAT they usually fail. They also cut against the NCSC's advice to consider leaving UPnP and port forwarding off.

How do fibre, a 4G/5G hub and a hotspot compare for a camera?

  • Full fibre or cable. Stable backhaul, usually a public IPv4 or at least fewer CGNAT surprises. Still needs a 2.4 GHz SSID for many cameras.
  • 4G or 5G home hub. Real household Wi-Fi. Signal depends on the mast. Data allowances and evening congestion can freeze a video stream. Remote inbound setups fail more often.
  • Phone hotspot. Fine to prove pairing. Poor as the only link for nights: heat, battery, and the phone leaving the room.

GOV.UK describes FWA as typically superfast or ultrafast, and sometimes gigabit. That is a speed band for the premises, not a promise that every camera app will stay up through a storm.

When is a non-Wi-Fi set the simpler path?

If you only need sound or a parent screen inside the house, a DECT or digital video set that never joins the hub avoids CGNAT, app accounts and 2.4 GHz pairing. If you need to look in from work, you need a cloud-app camera that only uses outbound connections — and a hub that stays powered. The Lullaby Trust's position is unchanged: a monitor is not a substitute for room-sharing in the first six months, and there is no research showing monitors prevent SIDS.

Questions parents ask

The camera works at home but the app fails at work. Is the camera broken?
Often not. That split is what CGNAT looks like: LAN and outbound cloud work; inbound remote view does not. Confirm the app fails on mobile data while you are still in the house, then read the maker's notes on "remote access" rather than adding hub port rules.
Does 5G home broadband fix the 2.4 GHz camera problem?
No. 5G is the mast-to-hub link. The camera still needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi name inside the house if that is all its radio supports.
Can I use the hub's guest Wi-Fi?

Is unlimited mobile broadband enough for overnight video?
A video stream can eat a fair-use cap even on "unlimited" plans, and evening cell congestion can freeze the picture. Check the contract's policy. An audio parent unit does not use that data path.
