What is the 30 hours childcare grace period if I lose my job?

When does the grace period apply?

Best Start in Life’s FAQ (updated 8 April 2026) says a grace period applies if the child already has a place where they are using the entitlement, and you then miss reconfirmation or no longer meet the criteria. Statutory guidance valid from 1 April 2026 says the same from the council’s side: where parents cease to meet the criteria on reconfirmation, the local authority should continue to fund the place for a limited grace period.

• Already in a working-parent place — grace can run.
• Code lapses before the child has started — statutory guidance says children should not start a new working-parent place during the grace period.
• Want to move settings during grace — the default is no. The council can use discretion if the setting closes or you have to move home because of domestic abuse or another emergency.

Ask the provider or the local authority whether you are in the grace period and what end date is encoded on the eligibility check. Parents do not set the date themselves. The Department for Education’s checker writes a grace-period end date onto the code.

How long does the grace period last after I lose my job?

There is no single “X weeks after you finish work” figure. Statutory guidance A1.23 (valid from 1 April 2026) uses the funding block — blocks end on 31 March, 31 August and 31 December:

• First half of a funding block: the local authority should fund until the end of that block.
• Latter half of a funding block: the local authority should fund until the end of the following block, or until the child reaches compulsory school age, whichever is shorter.

What should I do in the week I lose the job?

   Tell the provider the same week They need to know a reconfirm may fail. They can ask the council what grace end date is on the code once HMRC marks it invalid.

   Sign in to the childcare account Reconfirm if the window is still open and your details have changed. A missed reconfirm and a failed reconfirm both lead to the same statutory table once the code is invalid.

   Write down the grace end date It will be 31 March, 31 August or 31 December. Budget private fees from the day after that date if you still need the same hours.

   If you start work again, apply again Best Start in Life says you can submit a new application any time you meet the criteria, then present the code so the place can continue. The code for that parent and child does not change.

   If the child is 3 or 4, ask about universal 15 After grace ends, those hours remain. Confirm the sessions the setting can keep on 15 hours.

If you also claim Universal Credit, report the job loss in that account as a change of circumstances. That is a separate duty from the Childcare Service reconfirm.

What happens when the grace period ends?

Working-parent funding stops on the end date in Table A. Statutory guidance A1.30 says parents should be told that if they still do not meet the criteria, children aged 3 and 4 can continue the 15-hour universal entitlement. If the child used hours at more than one provider, the council should keep funding 15 hours at the provider or providers the parent chooses.

For a 2 year old, losing working-parent hours does not automatically open Early Learning for 2 year olds. The council has to check that scheme’s own rules (Universal Credit under the live income test, an education and health care plan, Disability Living Allowance, or leaving care under the listed orders). A1.25 lets councils consider a short extension in very exceptional circumstances — for example where a parent has been forced to leave home and paid work because of domestic abuse. That is a local-authority discretion, not a second national table.

My code was valid on 31 March but I lost the job before term started. Do we still have a place?

Statutory guidance A1.27 says a parent can take up a working-parent place in the grace period if the code was valid on the termly deadline (31 August, 31 December or 31 March), even if eligibility ends after that deadline and before the provider’s term start date. The guidance’s example: code valid on 31 March, eligibility ends on 4 April, provider term starts 11 April — the working-parent place can still start.
