How do I attach a next-to-me crib to a UK divan bed?

What does Chicco say about divan beds?

In the UK the product is a bedside crib or next-to-me crib. Chicco's Next2Me FAQ (updated 27 August 2024) states that every crib in the range is height adjustable, "can be adapted to suit most beds", and that "thanks to the folding feet, they can also be attached to divan beds."

The same FAQ says that in side-sleeping mode the crib "can be attached to your bed using the straps provided", and that when it is moved away the front panel should stay up and fully secured. Those are manufacturer lines, not a MayTally verdict on your bedroom.

The Lullaby Trust product guide warns that using a sleep product in a way the maker did not intend — it gives "adapting a cot and attaching it to an adult bed" as an example — can put a baby at risk. Use a bedside crib that is sold with straps and a drop side, and follow that model's manual. Do not jury-rig a standard cot.

Which mattress-height range applies to my Next2Me model?

Measure from the floor to the top of your adult mattress (or the height Chicco names as "mattress height" in the FAQ). Stay inside the centimetre window printed for your model. A deep divan plus a thick mattress can sit above the window even when the feet fold.

Chicco's FAQ also gives a use window for the Next2Me range: from newborn up until 6 months (approx. 9 kg), or until the baby can sit up, kneel or pull themselves up unaided. Which? reviews of the category use a similar six-month / sit-up line. Always prefer the label on your crib.

How do I run the straps around a divan or ottoman?

A divan has a solid base, so the feet cannot slide under the bed. That is the folding-feet case Chicco names. An ottoman or storage divan often blocks a straight under-bed path; the straps then have to go around the base rather than under a slat frame. Use only the straps that came with the crib.

   Read the sheet in the box Chicco manuals (for example the next2me instructions) put the straps in a pocket on the lining and show grey buckles under the fabric and red buckles on the belt. If your model uses different colours, follow that drawing.

   Fold the feet as the manual shows The FAQ's divan line depends on folding feet. Do not assume a half-fold is "close enough" if the manual shows a click or lock point — use the point drawn for your model.

   Set both legs to the same height The Chicco instructions say the two legs should always be adjusted to the same height, and the crib's side support should sit close to the adult mattress and aligned with it.

   Wrap the supplied belt around the bed structure The instructions describe fixing the belt around the bed structure, from bottom to top, and tightening until the crib is firmly secured with no space between the adult mattress and the crib. On a divan that usually means around the base. Do not substitute dressing-gown belts, bungee cords or extra webbing.

   Check the gap and the front panel Retighten after the mattress has settled. If you unclip and move the crib away, put the front panel up and secure it before you use it as a stand-alone crib.

MayTally does not judge whether your finished setup is right for your room. If the height is outside the printed window, or the straps will not wrap the base without a gap, the manufacturer range has not been met — use the crib in stand-alone mode with the panel up, or pick another sleep space the maker lists.

What do UK safer-sleep pages say about bedside cribs?

The Lullaby Trust says the place for a baby to sleep is their own clear, flat, separate sleep space, and that for the first six months at least, babies should be in the same room as you, day and night. A bedside crib is one way families keep that separate space in the parents' room.

Since 2020 the Trust lists BS EN 1130:2019 for bedside cribs, and notes that cots should no longer have a side that fully drops down. Check the standard mark on the frame or manual. The Trust also wants a firm, flat, waterproof mattress with no raised or cushioned edges.

What if the straps will not reach around a king-size ottoman?

Do not join extra straps or run the belt through a drawer cavity in a way the manual never drew. Chicco's published fix is the supplied belt around the bed structure. If that belt will not close, you are outside the instructions.

• Ask the maker whether a longer official strap exists for your model.
• Use stand-alone mode with the front panel up, still in the same room.
• A Moses basket or cot in the room is the Lullaby Trust's other named separate sleep space.

In shortFold the feet as drawn, stay inside the centimetre window, wrap only the supplied straps, and leave no gap. If any of those fail, the manufacturer attachment method has not been completed.

Do these centimetre figures apply to SnuzPod, Shnuggle or Baby Elegance?

No. Other brands publish their own height ranges, strap paths and stop-use signs. Repeat the same method: read that manual's divan / folding-foot note, measure mattress height, use only that brand's straps. Search GOV.UK for the model name before you buy second-hand.
