What UK size is Australian 0000 baby clothes?
Why must I not read 0000 as UK 0–3?
The zeros are an Australian / New Zealand age code, not a count of UK months. Matching "0000" to "0–3" because both start with zero puts a Newborn-length gift onto a 56–62cm UK hanger. Boody UK prints the AU numbers on a UK site and defines them with weight and height: 0000 = Newborn, up to 4kg and 56cm; 000 = 0–3 months, 4–6kg and up to 62cm. Convert those kilos and centimetres onto the UK brand you will actually wash.
What UK label does 0000 land on once I use kg and cm?

| AU / Boody UK code | Boody UK weight and height | Nearest Next line | Nearest John Lewis line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0000 | up to 4kg; up to 56cm; age guide Newborn | Next Up to 1 month (4.5kg / 56cm), not First Size (3.4kg / 50cm) | John Lewis Newborn (up to 4.1kg / 56cm) |
| 000 | 4–6kg; up to 62cm; age guide 0–3 months | Next Up to 3 months (4.5–6kg / 56–62cm) | John Lewis 0–3 months (5.7kg listed / 56–62cm) |
| 00 | 6–8kg; up to 68cm; age guide 3–6 months | Next 3–6 months (6–8kg / 62–68cm) | John Lewis 3–6 months (7.4kg / 62–68cm) |
| 0 | 8–10kg; up to 76cm; age guide 6–12 months | Next 6–9 / 9–12 months by kg and cm | John Lewis 6–9 / 9–12 months by kg and cm |
ababy.com.au's conversion table also maps 0000 to about 3–4kg and 50–56cm, and 000 to 4–6kg and 56–62cm. That agrees with Boody on the useful point: 0000 is the Newborn-length band, not UK 0–3.
How do I convert a 0000 gift without guessing the zeros?
- Read kg and cm on the AU piece or brand chart If the gift only says 0000, use Boody's published band (up to 4kg / 56cm) or the maker's own chart. Do not infer size from how many zeros you count.
- Open the UK shop chart you buy from Find the row whose weight and height cover those numbers. On Next that is usually Up to 1 month, not First Size. On John Lewis it is Newborn.
- Check the baby's measured kg and cm A 4.2kg / 57cm baby is already past Boody 0000 and John Lewis Newborn on paper. The matching AU code is 000; the matching UK band is 0–3 / Up to 3 months.
- Keep First Size separate Next First Size is 3.4kg and 50cm. That is smaller than AU 0000. A 0000 gift can swamp a 3kg / 49cm baby the way a long UK Newborn does.
Is Australian 000 the same as UK 0–3 months?
Closer than 0000 is, but still not a letter-for-letter match. Boody 000 is 4–6kg and up to 62cm. Next Up to 3 months is 4.5–6kg and 56–62cm. John Lewis 0–3 months lists 5.7kg and 56–62cm. Mamas & Papas 0–3 months is 6.5kg and 62cm. A 4.2kg baby in AU 000 may still be on the light side of John Lewis 0–3 and past John Lewis Newborn. Convert the kilos, then pick the UK row.
Boody's next codes keep stepping: 00 is 3–6 months (6–8kg / 68cm), 0 is 6–12 months (8–10kg / 76cm). UK 0–3 is not Boody 0. The single zero is a later size.
What if the parcel arrives before we know birth weight?
The NHS newborn list assumes you will add clothes after birth and does not translate overseas size codes. Hold tags on 0000 and 000 pieces until you have a weighed, measured baby. A 0000 parcel is a Newborn-length start, not a reason to skip UK 0–3 in the main drawer.
In shortTranslate 0000 through kg and cm. On Boody UK that is up to 4kg and 56cm — John Lewis Newborn or Next Up to 1 month, not First Size and not UK 0–3. The digit 0 is not a conversion key.
Do all Australian brands use the same 0000 kilograms?
No. Boody UK and ababy.com.au sit near 4kg / 56cm for 0000. Some AU makers treat 000 as the everyday newborn and 0000 as a shorter pre-newborn. If the gift has a sewn-in weight or length, use that. If it only has zeros, start from Boody's published UK chart and check fit against the baby's own kg and cm.
Questions parents ask
- Someone posted a size 0 AU sleepsuit. Is that newborn?
- On Boody UK, size 0 is 6–12 months, 8–10kg, up to 76cm. That is not Newborn and not 0–3. Read the zeros as a code, then convert the printed kg and cm.
- Is 0000 the same as Next First Size?
- No. First Size is 3.4kg and 50cm. Boody 0000 is up to 4kg and 56cm. First Size is the smaller of the two.
- Can I use EU size 56 instead of converting 0000?
- Size 56 is a length label (body up to about 56cm on C&A). That matches the height side of Boody 0000. Still check weight on the UK brand chart, because Next First Size ends at 50cm.
- What UK size is AU 00000?
- ababy.com.au lists 00000 as a premature / tiny band (about up to 2.5kg and 45cm). That sits with UK Tiny Baby or Early Baby, not with 0000 or 0–3.
