Should I buy baby shoes before they walk UK?

When do NHS trusts say to buy first shoes?

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust's babies-and-feet page is blunt: your child does not need shoes until they are walking competently, and they should be barefoot for as long as possible so the foot can develop. Once walking is established, that is the moment for a first pair, measured by a trained fitter, then re-measured every two to four months.

Beds and Luton Children's Health (NHS) says the same while they are learning to walk: avoid putting shoes on their feet indoors so they can feel the floor and different textures. If you want cover outdoors, they point to soft-sole shoes and say they do not recommend trainers or fashion shoes for babies. Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS's first-shoes leaflet adds there is no need to put a child in shoes until they can walk unaided, and that shoes can be reserved for walking outside at first.

These are NHS trust leaflets, not a fashion rule. If a physiotherapist has asked for a particular shoe before walking, follow that team. The public pages are barefoot indoors, fitted shoes after walking is established.

What should I use instead of hard-soled pram shoes?

Bradford's page splits the gift-list items from first shoes:

  • Socks or bootees for warmth. Babies lose heat quickly. Choose a pair that is long enough at the toes and not tight in the weave.
  • Pram shoes — 'should only be worn for special occasions. They are difficult to size. The best way to keep the feet warm is with socks or bootees.'
  • Baby grows and sleepsuits — check the foot is long enough and not squeezing.
  • Bare feet indoors once they are pulling up and cruising, so toes can grip.

That is the skip: you do not need a £25–£40 pair of named 'first baby shoes' in newborn, 0–3 or 3–6 sizes for a baby who is not walking. A pack of well-fitting cotton socks does the warmth job the NHS pages describe.

Checked 10 September 2026 on very.co.uk, startriteshoes.com and johnlewis.com. PlayPennies has previously grouped shoes with other low-use buys in waste surveys; the official reason to wait is the NHS trust wording, not a bargain headline. Age-box '0–3 months' shoes are a gift, not a walking milestone.

Two or three gifted pairs before walking is £50–£120 that never sees a pavement. Feet also grow in spurts in the first year — Bradford notes they can reach almost half of adult length in that time — so a newborn leather T-bar is outgrown before it is useful.

How do I choose first shoes once walking is established?

  1. Wait until walking is established Not the first cruise along the sofa. Competent indoor walking, then shoes for outdoors. Bradford: 'walking competently'. Gloucestershire: 'walk unaided'.
  2. Get both feet measured by a trained fitter Length and width. Bradford says re-measure every two to four months; shoes should have a fastening so you are not forcing the foot in.
  3. Choose a flexible, foot-shaped pair Beds and Luton: soft soles for babies, not trainers or fashion shoes. Oxford Health's footwear leaflet (if you want extra detail) asks for a firm heel, room for toes to lie flat, and a sole that bends at the front rather than twisting like a cloth.
  4. Keep indoor time barefoot or in socks Shoes are for outside. The learning still happens on the floor.
  5. Check fit often Bradford: children's feet grow on average two sizes a year in the first four years, so check about every eight weeks once they are in shoes.

Are soft bootees the same as first shoes?

No. Bootees and well-fitting socks are warmth. First shoes are outdoor protection once walking is established, professionally fitted, with a fastening. A knitted bootee that tightens around the toes fails Bradford's own warning about weave and circulation. A hard-soled fashion shoe on a non-walker is the other miss: it is not warmth, and it is not a fitted walker.

If a gift arrives anyway, keep it for a photograph or a family event, then go back to socks. Do not use it as a reason to put shoes on a cruising baby indoors.

In short, should I buy shoes before they walk?

In shortNHS trust pages say no: barefoot indoors, socks or bootees for warmth, first shoes after walking is established and then professionally fitted. Gift-list pram shoes at £25–£40 are occasion wear and hard to size. Save the fitting-brand money for the outdoor pair you need once they actually walk.

Questions parents ask

My baby is cruising. Do they need shoes in the house?
Beds and Luton NHS say avoid shoes while they are learning to walk, so they can feel the floor. Bradford says go barefoot as long as possible. Soft socks are enough on a cold floor.
What if their feet always feel cold?
Bradford says that is common, and the answer they give is socks and bootees, not a structured shoe. Check the sock is not too tight at the toes.
Should I buy a baby walker instead?
Bradford's FAQ says baby walkers are not recommended; a baby will walk when ready. That is a separate skip from shoes, but the same 'wait for the milestone' idea.
Do I need a shop fitter every time?
Bradford: yes, if the shop has fitters. Re-check every two to four months in the early years, and about every eight weeks once they are in shoes, because feet grow fast.
