Can I add a changing table topper to an existing chest of drawers in the UK?

Do add-on toppers fit any chest of drawers?

Usually no. UK add-on toppers are sold to match a named collection. Petite Amélie's Amande changing table topper is “specially designed for the Amande chest of drawers”. The maker FAQ answers “Does this changing topper fit any chest of drawers?” with no. Listed size is W 114.5 × D 77.1 × H 10 cm on a chest that is W 114.5 × D 55 × H 90 cm — the topper is deeper than the chest, so it overhangs by design on that range only.

IKEA UK sells whole units: SUNDVIK (changing table/chest, leaf folds away) and SMÅGÖRA (changing table/bookshelf). Those pages do not offer a topper SKU for MALM, HEMNES or KULLEN. A foam mat on a chest you already own is a different product class from a wooden topper sold against EN 12221 for a named carcass.

US “universal dresser toppers” sized in inches are a different market. A UK chest needs a millimetre match to the range the maker names, or it is not that product.

How do I measure the chest before I buy anything?

Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored. Those sentences are about a unit IKEA sold as a changer. They are not a transfer certificate for a MALM you already assembled.

What if the chest was never sold as a changing unit?

Then it has no EN 12221 type plate and no “for children up to” changing line. EN 12221:2026 says it only covers the function of an item as a changing unit; if the item is also storage furniture, other standards apply to that function. Putting a mat on a chest does not write a changing-unit mark onto the carcass.

If you still use a raised surface, NHS and CAPT rules do not change: stay beside the baby the whole time; do not rely on straps; change on the floor if you can. CAPT also says keep low furniture away from windows so it cannot be used as a step. A topper that overhangs toward a window is a climbing prompt once the child is on their feet.
