When do cloth nappies break even against Aldi Mamia?

Why is Aldi Mamia the hard comparison, not Pampers?

MoneyHelper's 2024 snapshot, quoted by Which? in February 2026, put leading-brand disposables at about £1,000 over 2.5 years. Chat-style answers still repeat that line. UKParenting and Mumsnet threads already treat Aldi or Lidl as the real rival. Break-even versus Mamia is a timing question: how many months until cloth's kit is paid back after you subtract cloth laundry.

This page is not a Tesco / Asda / Aldi unit-price catalogue. It dates a few Mamia shelf figures so the timing maths has a denominator, then stops.

What does Aldi charge for Mamia nappies today?

Aldi's own UK site on 10 September 2026 listed these Mamia packs. Online prices can differ from the aisle. They are not a full size-by-size shopping list — they show why per-nappy pence stay low.

Prices and unit pence taken from Aldi UK product and brand pages on 10 September 2026. Aldi states online prices may vary from in-store prices. These are dated shelf snapshots for break-even timing, not a live catalogue and not a recommendation to buy any brand.

A May 2023 Nappy Lady sheet priced Mamia size 1 at 3.5p and size 6 at 8.3p, and put a full one-child Mamia run (nappies, wipes, sacks) at £360.22. The September 2026 aisle is still in that low-pence band on the small sizes. Do not treat either date as a 2026 official average.

How do I calculate break-even in months?

Break-even months = kit cost ÷ (Mamia spend per month − cloth laundry per month). If laundry per month is greater than or equal to Mamia per month, cloth does not break even on money against Mamia on that child. Which? still lists line-drying as the habit that keeps laundry down.

  1. Kit you actually paid Value flats / terry-type sets are the ones that can approach Mamia. Mid all-in-one stashes often cannot on one child. Which? (February 2026) noted Aldi had sold own-brand reusables at around £4.99 each but was not stocking them then.
  2. Mamia monthly spend NHS older-baby band is 6 to 8 changes a day. Worked example only: 7 × 30 days × 6p (size 4 listing) ≈ £12.60 of nappies, before wipes. Use the size you are actually opening.
  3. Cloth laundry monthly Which? : wash every two to three days (about 10–15 nappy washes a month). Electricity = washes × labelled kWh × Ofgem / bill rate (26.11p or 26.32p/kWh on the published Direct Debit averages). Add metered water and detergent. Add dryer kWh if you tumble-dry.
  4. Divide only if the gap is positive £100 kit ÷ £4/month gap = 25 months. £250 kit ÷ £4/month = 63 months — past one typical potty window. A £0 or negative gap means no money break-even versus Mamia on that child.

What did a May 2023 UK table imply about timing?

The Nappy Lady one-child totals using May 2023 prices put a £100 terry kit at £348.17 including wash, versus Mamia at £360.22. That is a £12 gap over the whole first child — months from a wash, not a windfall. Their mid kit at £497 was above Mamia. Their Pampers column at £1,437 is the comparison ChatGPT still quotes; it is not the Mamia test.

Per change on that sheet, terry-plus-wash was 6.98p versus Mamia 5.3p in size 1 and 10.1p in size 6. Early months favoured Mamia; later sizes favoured the cheap cloth kit. NHS frequency is also higher at the start (10 to 12 a day), so more of the expensive-for-cloth window sits in year one.

Those 6.98p / 5.3p / 10.1p cells used electricity at £0.33/kWh in May 2023. Rebuild the wash pence at 26.11p or 26.32p/kWh before you treat them as current.

When does cloth still beat Mamia on the clock?

  • A cheap kit, line-dried, Eco wash, two children — child two has no kit to earn back. See one versus two.
  • You would otherwise buy leading-brand disposables — MoneyHelper's £1,000 / 2.5-year line is a different, easier hurdle than Mamia.
  • You already own the stash — break-even versus Mamia is then only laundry versus packs. Often still close; a condenser dryer can flip it. See tumble dryers.

In shortVersus Aldi Mamia, ask how many months the kit needs at your gap after laundry. A 2023 retailer sheet already had a £100 kit almost tying Mamia on child one. Date today's 3p–8p listings, use the Ofgem unit rate, and do not substitute a Pampers headline.

What is this page not trying to be?

  • A weekly Aldi / Lidl / Tesco unit-price index.
  • A why-UK-prices-vary explainer.
  • A claim that cloth always undercuts supermarket disposables.
  • A 2026 pence-per-wash published as fact.

Questions parents ask

Do I include wipes and nappy sacks in the Mamia monthly figure?
If you would have bought them with the disposables, yes — they belong in the disposable monthly spend. Cloth users who wash reusable wipes in the nappy load should not add a matching disposable-wipe line on the cloth side.
Aldi sometimes sells reusable Mamia nappies. Does that change break-even?
Which? (February 2026) said Aldi had sold own-brand reusables at around £4.99 each but was not stocking them at the time. If a Specialbuy returns, it is just another kit price to drop into the same months formula.
Can break-even land in a few months against Mamia?
Only if the kit is very cheap and you would have spent much more than laundry each month on Mamia. The May 2023 one-child terry-versus-Mamia totals were almost level. Against Pampers-level pack prices the same kit can cross over much sooner.
Should I use 3p or 8p as the Mamia pence?
Use the size you are in. NHS change counts are higher when babies are small and packs are cheaper per nappy; later sizes cost more per nappy on Aldi's September 2026 listings. An average you invent for the whole childhood is weaker than two or three size bands.
