DECT audio monitor vs Wi-Fi camera: which is more reliable in a flat?
What is DECT audio monitoring and does it avoid interference?
DECT — Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications — is the radio standard behind almost every cordless home phone sold in Europe since the 1990s. A DECT baby monitor is the same technology in a different box: the baby unit is the base, the parent unit is the handset, and the audio travels between them as an encrypted digital signal.
The reason it is quieter than other monitors comes down to spectrum. The European harmonised standard ETSI EN 301 406-1 (V3.2.1, August 2026) states that "the DECT service frequency band for transmitting and receiving for all elements is 1 880 MHz to 1 900 MHz", with ten radio carriers placed in that band, each divided into time slots. ETSI's DECT committee describes it as a "dedicated global spectrum" that does not depend on commercial carriers. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microwave ovens and most video baby monitors live somewhere else — in the 2400–2483.5 MHz band defined by ETSI EN 300 328 — so none of them can talk over a DECT link.
DECT also has a built-in way of avoiding its own neighbours. The standard requires equipment to select channels (clause 4.5.8, "channel selection"): before transmitting, a DECT device scans the band and picks a carrier and time slot that are quiet, and moves if one becomes busy. That is why a DECT monitor and a DECT phone in the same flat, and the DECT phones in the flats either side, coexist rather than clash. Manufacturers lean on this: Philips markets its SCD503 as offering a "100% private connection" with no interference from "other baby monitors, cordless phones and mobile phones"; VTech describes its DM1212 as "DECT technology for secure connection and clear sound without interference"; BT's Digital Baby Monitor 400 is listed as "interference free".
Those are marketing claims about a real engineering property. Treat "interference-free" as "does not share a band with Wi-Fi and picks a clear channel", not as a promise that the parent unit will work through three concrete floors — the same Philips page notes that "the operating range of the baby monitor varies depending on the surroundings".
Is a DECT audio monitor more reliable than a Wi-Fi camera?
If "reliable" means "I hear my baby every time, with the least that can go wrong", yes. If it means "I can see the cot from the office", no — DECT cannot do that at all. The table separates the two.

Which monitor works best in an interference-prone London flat?
A London flat combines the worst conditions for 2.4 GHz: dozens of visible Wi-Fi networks, mesh systems in every other flat, thick party walls or concrete floors, and rooms so close together that audio feedback is a real problem. It also has the best conditions for DECT: short distances, a band nobody else in the building is streaming on, and a monitor type that costs less than the camera.
We are not going to name a winner; the model that suits you depends on the features below. Published specifications show that mainstream DECT audio monitors from Philips (SCD503), VTech (DM1212) and BT (Digital Baby Monitor 400) share the same core: DECT audio, an out-of-range alert and sound-level lights, with the VTech adding a temperature reading and talk-back. VTech quotes the DM1212 at up to 75 m indoors and 460 m outdoors; BT quotes up to 300 m for the 400. Both are open-air figures — in a flat you are unlikely to reach the edge.
- Sound-level LEDs matter more in a flat than in a house: you can leave the speaker almost off and still see the bar climb when the baby stirs.
- Vibrating alert (the DM1212 lists one) lets the parent unit sit in a pocket while you cook or shower without waking a partner.
- A minimum spacing of about 1 metre between baby and parent unit, per VTech's guides, avoids the howling feedback that small flats invite.
- An ECO or low-power mode (Philips' Smart ECO) reduces transmission when the units are close — which in a flat is always.

Can DECT monitors still suffer from dropouts or noise?
Yes. A reserved band removes Wi-Fi as a cause; it does not remove physics or setup mistakes. The realistic causes in a flat:
- Range through concrete. Post-war blocks with reinforced floors and lift shafts attenuate 1.9 GHz as much as 2.4 GHz. The parent unit will warn you with an out-of-range beep; the fix is placement, not a different brand.
- Feedback howl. Units too close, or the parent-unit speaker facing the baby unit through a thin wall. Move them apart or turn the parent volume down.
- Another DECT device too close. A DECT phone base next to the baby unit gives channel selection less room. A metre of separation is enough.
- Low parent-unit battery or a cheap adaptor. Crackle and drop-outs towards morning are often a tired battery, not the radio; an unbranded replacement adaptor can add hum. Check a second-hand unit against official recall records — batteries and adaptors are the recurring hazard in monitor recalls.
- VOX set too low. A monitor that seems to "drop" sound may be muting it below a sensitivity threshold. See VOX mode and quiet newborn noises.
How do DECT and Wi-Fi differ for privacy?
A DECT monitor's audio exists only as an encrypted radio link inside the range of your flat. There is no account, no server, no remote login and no password to leak. Someone would need to be within radio range with specialist equipment and the intent to break the link.
A Wi-Fi camera is built for remote access, and that is where the risk sits. The National Cyber Security Centre's guidance on smart cameras and baby monitors says live feeds "can (in rare cases) be accessed by unauthorised users" because "some cameras are shipped with the default password set by the manufacturer, which is often well-known or guessable". Its three steps: change any default password, turn on automatic updates, and disable remote viewing if you do not need it; it also suggests turning off UPnP and port forwarding on the router. Second-hand Wi-Fi cameras can remain linked to the previous owner's account. The NCSC's advice for any second-hand connected device is a factory reset and new passwords before use. A second-hand DECT monitor has no account to inherit — its risks are the battery and the adaptor.
Which connection works best during a broadband outage?
DECT, without qualification: the words "broadband" and "router" do not appear anywhere in how it works. A Wi-Fi camera's behaviour when the internet goes down depends on how the app is built. Some cameras allow local viewing over your own Wi-Fi even when the connection to the outside world is down; many route every stream through the maker's cloud and show "offline" the moment your ISP hiccups. The product listing will not tell you which; the only way to know is to unplug the router's broadband cable and open the app.
There is a middle path for people who want video: hybrid monitors with a dedicated parent unit and an optional app. The parent unit keeps working through the outage and the app comes back when the internet does. How should you test signal quality in a flat before bedtime?
Do this on the first evening, while the monitor can still go back to the shop. It takes fifteen minutes and needs a phone and a partner or a speaker.
- Put the baby unit in its real position At least 1 metre from the cot, cable out of reach, not next to a DECT phone base or the router. Test from where it will actually live.
- Play a quiet, changing sound in the cot A phone at low volume playing speech or a ticking clock. Not lullaby music — its level barely changes and some monitors treat it as silence.
- Walk the parent unit through the whole flat with doors shut Bathroom with the extractor on, kitchen with the microwave running, the balcony, the far bedroom, the hallway outside your front door. Wait a full minute in each spot.
- Listen for three things Does the sound stay continuous? Is there a delay between the source and the parent unit (clap next to the baby unit and count)? Do the sound-level lights follow the source?
- Find the edge on purpose Keep going — the stairwell, the lift lobby, a neighbour's landing if you can — until the parent unit reports out of range. Confirm it beeps rather than only flashing. Walk back until it reconnects.
- For a Wi-Fi camera, repeat at peak time and then pull the plug Test at 8–9 p.m. when neighbours are streaming; note the delay and any freezes. Then unplug the broadband cable from the router and see whether the app still shows the cot. That answer decides whether it is usable in an outage.
- Run one night on battery while you are still checking in person If the parent unit does not last the night unplugged, it lives on its cradle. If a DECT unit crackles towards morning, suspect the battery before the radio.

A Wi-Fi camera buys you a picture and remote viewing at the price of sharing spectrum with the whole building and depending on your internet. If you want video without that dependence, a local FHSS video monitor or a hybrid with a parent unit sits between them. Whatever you choose, walk the flat with it before the first night — and keep the Lullaby Trust's advice in view: no monitor has been shown to prevent SIDS, and the same room for the first six months is the recommendation a monitor supplements, not replaces.

- Will my DECT cordless phone interfere with a DECT baby monitor?
- The DECT standard requires each device to scan the band and pick a clear carrier and time slot, so phones and monitors share it by design. Keep the phone base a metre or more from the baby unit and you are unlikely to notice either.
- Does a DECT monitor need Wi-Fi or an app?
- No. The baby unit and parent unit are a matched pair on the 1880–1900 MHz DECT band. There is nothing to connect to and no account. It also means there is no remote viewing — the parent unit is the only receiver.
- Is Wi-Fi camera delay dangerous?
- It is a nuisance rather than a hazard for a healthy baby with a parent nearby, but a second or more of lag makes talk-back awkward and can make a short cry sound later than it happened. DECT audio has no perceptible delay. If low latency matters to you, that is a reason to prefer DECT or a local FHSS video monitor.
- Which is cheaper to run?
- Neither type has a subscription for basic monitoring. DECT audio monitors are generally the cheapest category to buy; some Wi-Fi cameras charge optional monthly fees for recording or history. Both use a mains adaptor for the baby unit and a rechargeable parent unit or phone.
- Can I use a DECT monitor in a holiday let or caravan?
- Yes — it needs a mains socket for the baby unit and nothing else. That is one of DECT's practical advantages over a Wi-Fi camera, which needs a network you may not have or trust.
