Does applying for Tax-Free Childcare automatically close your Universal Credit?
Does the apply button close Universal Credit by itself?
Turn2us’s working-parent childcare page is the line parents quote: you cannot get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as Universal Credit; if you claim Tax-Free Childcare, it will not stop your Universal Credit automatically, but you will be asked to close the Universal Credit claim. That matches how the two departments are built. Tax-Free Childcare is an HMRC childcare-account decision. Universal Credit is a DWP award. Pressing apply on GOV.UK does not send a kill-switch to your Universal Credit journal.
HMRC’s TFC12050 manual even expects the first application to happen while Universal Credit is still live, so the refusal can show whether anything else fails. If the apply button closed the DWP claim, that test would be impossible. GOV.UK still tells you to wait for the Tax-Free Childcare decision before cancelling Universal Credit.
Why do Turn2us and Entitledto sound like they disagree?
They are describing two different moments. Turn2us is talking about applying. Entitledto is talking about being awarded Tax-Free Childcare. Entitledto’s childcare page says: if you apply for and are awarded Tax-Free Childcare, your Universal Credit or tax credit award will be terminated — the whole award, including amounts for you, your children and your housing, not just the childcare element.
HMRC’s TFC40200 is the statute-level version of Entitledto’s tax-credit sentence: a successful Tax-Free Childcare declaration of eligibility terminates any tax credit award. The same manual then says that to meet the eligibility conditions a person must not be claiming Universal Credit on the date of their declaration. Universal Credit is not written as an automatic terminate-on-apply event. It is written as a condition you have to satisfy by closing the claim.

| Source | The sentence people quote | The moment it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Turn2us | Tax-Free Childcare will not stop Universal Credit automatically; you are asked to close the claim | The application |
| Entitledto | An award of Tax-Free Childcare terminates the whole Universal Credit or tax credit award | A successful award — the cost of choosing Tax-Free Childcare |
| HMRC TFC40200 | A successful declaration terminates tax credits; you must not be claiming Universal Credit on the declaration date | Eligibility law |
| GOV.UK / TFC12050 | Wait for a decision; do not cancel Universal Credit until you know Tax-Free Childcare would otherwise be open | The order of events |
Do not invent a back-office process. Distinguish three facts: you cannot be eligible for Tax-Free Childcare while Universal Credit is payable; a successful declaration terminates tax credits; Universal Credit claimants are asked to close the claim themselves.
What do GOV.UK and HMRC require before you are eligible?
GOV.UK’s eligibility page says if you claim Universal Credit or childcare vouchers, you cannot get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time. The children guidance says you cannot open a Tax-Free Childcare account until you close your Universal Credit claim. TFC12050 adds that a claim which might still put Universal Credit into payment — including an award reduced to nil — blocks a valid declaration for that assessment period and the following three months.
Those rules explain why a successful, spendable Tax-Free Childcare account and a payable Universal Credit award cannot sit together. They do not mean the childcare-service apply button is the thing that ends Universal Credit. You close Universal Credit in the Universal Credit account, after you have a decision you have read.
How should I read a Tax-Free Childcare decision while Universal Credit is live?
- Treat a refusal that names only Universal Credit as the expected test result HMRC designed that outcome. It is not proof that DWP has closed anything.
- Look for any second reason Income, work, residence or the child’s age would still refuse you after you closed Universal Credit. Leave the DWP claim open if a second reason appears.
- If you still want Tax-Free Childcare, close Universal Credit yourself Use the Universal Credit account. Turn2us’s wording is that you are asked to close the claim — not that HMRC closes it for you.
- Apply again only after the claim is closed A later successful declaration is the Entitledto moment: you have chosen Tax-Free Childcare instead of the whole Universal Credit award. Compare that cost on the GOV.UK childcare calculator and MayTally’s TFC versus UC tool first.
What happens to tax credits if a Tax-Free Childcare declaration succeeds?
TFC40200 draws a brighter line for tax credits than for Universal Credit. A successful declaration terminates any tax credit award. HMRC notes that tax credits have been replaced by Universal Credit for most people and survive only in limited scenarios. If you are one of those remaining tax-credit households, the terminate-on-success rule is the one that applies — that is closer to Entitledto’s “award will be terminated” sentence.
For Universal Credit, the same manual’s next sentence is the one that matters: you must not be claiming Universal Credit on the declaration date. The closure is a condition of eligibility, not an automatic side-effect of clicking apply. Once a Tax-Free Childcare period is already running, TFC40200 separately allows a later Universal Credit claim during that period so you are not left without support for up to three months — that is what happens to the account if you claim Universal Credit.
In shortIn short: applying does not auto-close Universal Credit. Turn2us and HMRC agree that you close the DWP claim. Entitledto’s “terminates the whole award” line is the price of a successful Tax-Free Childcare choice, and it is written in statute for tax credits. Point the pounds to GOV.UK, not to a blog rate.
Questions parents ask
- If HMRC says I am eligible, has Universal Credit already stopped?
- Not on Turn2us’s or TFC12050’s wording. Eligibility for a later, successful declaration still requires that Universal Credit is not payable on that date. Check the Universal Credit account. If payments are still listed, the DWP claim is still live.
- Will DWP write to me asking me to close the claim?
- Turn2us says you will be asked to close the Universal Credit claim. Official GOV.UK pages do not spell out the letter. Do not wait for a mystery stop: if you have chosen Tax-Free Childcare, close the claim in the Universal Credit account after the HMRC decision.
- Does a successful Tax-Free Childcare declaration close Child Benefit?
- No official page in this set ties Tax-Free Childcare to ending Child Benefit. GOV.UK’s children guidance says Universal Credit is paid separately from Child Benefit. This page is not the High Income Child Benefit Charge keep-or-give-up tool.
- What if I already had Tax-Free Childcare and then claimed Universal Credit?
- That is the other direction. HMRC TFC40200 says the current entitlement period can run to its end; then do not reconfirm. See what happens to a Tax-Free Childcare account after claiming Universal Credit.
