What should I ask the parents before I join the Thursday queue?

The useful grandparent brief is "what is already in the house?", not "what is on the poster". Aldi Specialbuys are one-shot and in store only. If you buy a second change mat or a second Moses basket, you have spent the event price on a duplicate.

1. Which sleep space are they using for the first months — cot, Moses basket, travel cot — and do they already have a mattress for it?
2. Do they want more muslins, bibs and hooded towels, or are drawers full?

4. Sizes they still need for vests and sleepsuits in the next two months.
5. Anything they have asked you not to buy (nests, pillows, weighted blankets, cot bumpers).

The Lullaby Trust's expectant-parents page says you do not need to buy lots of expensive products. The sleep list is a cot or Moses basket, a portable sleep space if you need one, a firm flat waterproof mattress, a sheet or sleep bag, a room thermometer, and a car seat for travel — not for routine sleep.

Quote the charity, then stop. Lullaby Trust mattresses and bedding says the mattress should be firm, flat and waterproof, in good condition, and a good fit. It advises against pods, nests, pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, sheepskin and weighted bedding. Baby sleeping products repeats that a British Standard is a general product test — it is not a SIDS standard.

RoSPA says a clear sleep space should contain only that mattress and a tucked-in blanket or a well-fitting sleeping bag. NHS says baby nests are not suitable to sleep in, and a borrowed cot should ideally get a new mattress.

• If they asked for a Moses basket — stand in the aisle with the check list. A press price is not the check.
• If they did not ask — buy muslins or books. A surprise sleep product is the one most likely to be unused or to fight the space they already set up.
