How many hats does a newborn need?
How many hats does the NHS list?
Two different jobs, not two of the same beanie. What you'll need for your baby lists a wool or cotton hat, mittens, and socks or bootees for going out if the weather is cold, and separately a sun hat for going out if it's hot or the sun is bright. It prefers close-knitted patterns so fingers and toes do not get caught.
Best Start in Life writes the same split as a sun hat for summer, or a wool or cotton hat for the colder months. NCT quotes that as a wool or cotton hat for winter, or a wide-brimmed sun hat. Shop posts that say "2–3 hats" usually mean three of one style. The official list is one cold-weather hat and one sun hat.

So the hospital bag is usually one hat. That can be the cold-weather wool or cotton hat if you are going home in a British autumn or winter, or a light cotton hat if that is what the unit names. The sun hat can stay at home until the first bright outing.
How to build a two-hat-plus-spare set
- Buy the NHS cold-weather hat One wool or cotton hat, close-knit rather than a loose knit, for going out when it is cold. That is the NHS going-out line, not an indoor wardrobe.
- Buy the NHS sun hat One sun hat for hot or bright days. NCT and Best Start in Life describe a wide brim for outdoor shade. Newborn skin is kept out of direct sun on the NHS sun-safety pages.
- Add one spare of the season you are in Hats go missing in prams and get damp. A second wool or cotton hat in winter, or a second sun hat in summer, is a wash-and-lost buffer. It is not a third official NHS category.
- Put one hat in the hospital bag Match the Trust or NCT labour-bag line: one hat with the vests and babygrows. Leave the other season's hat at home.
What do official pages say about hats once you are inside?
NHS Best Start in Life's dressing page says to always remove hats and extra clothing as soon as you're indoors or you get into a warm car, bus or train — even if that means waking the baby. NCT repeats that take-off-indoors line. The Lullaby Trust's room-temperature page states that babies do not need to wear hats indoors. Those are the official sentences. This page does not add a temperature verdict of its own.

When is the sun hat the one that matters?
On the NHS first-weeks list, the sun hat is for going out if it is hot or the sun is bright. NCT adds that a newborn should be kept in the shade, and that after 6 months a wide-brimmed hat is used outdoors. The two-hat split still holds in summer: you do not drop the wool or cotton hat from the year-round list if you also have cool evenings, and you do not buy three sun hats to replace it.

Questions parents ask
- Is two or three hats the official number?
- The NHS lists two different hats: a wool or cotton hat for cold outings and a sun hat for hot or bright days. Hospital bags usually add one of those for the stay. A spare of the current season is a practical buffer. That is not the same as buying three matching beanies.
- Do I need a hospital hat and a separate going-home hat?
- Most Trust and NCT lists name one hat plus a warm going-home layer (coat, cardigan or "something warm"). One clean hat can do the trip home if it has not been worn through a long ward stay. Pack a second only if your unit's list is unclear and you want a dry spare in the pouch.
- Should both hats be wool?
- No. The NHS cold-weather line is wool or cotton rather than nylon. The other official hat is a sun hat. NCT describes a wide brim for the sun hat.
- Do twins need four hats?
- NCT times the hospital-bag baby list by two, so two hats go in for two babies. At home, keep the NHS split per baby who cannot share a size: one cold-weather hat and one sun hat each, plus a shared spare if they wear the same size.
