How many muslin squares do I need for a newborn?

Do official lists name a number?

No. NCT's hospital bag checklist lists muslin square (singular) in the baby column. The NHS hospital bag checklist lists muslin squares (plural) and does not say how many. Neither page locks 6, 8 or 10.

Brand blogs often lock a pack size because they sell packs. Treat those figures as shop copy. Your number is wash frequency × places the square has to be, plus a couple wet in the laundry.

How do wash days set the number?

A used square is out of rotation until it is dry. Milk, posset and nappy leaks can retire more than one a day in the first weeks. Count stations first, then multiply by how often you run the machine.

Where do the squares live day to day?

• Changing bag. One dry square (or two if you are out all day). This is the one NCT is pointing at for the hospital bag.
• Feeding chair or sofa. Milk and posset land here. This station empties fastest in the first fortnight.
• Pram. A spare for dribbles and as a light shade — not as a duvet and not as loose bedding in a cot.
• Cot-side or change station at home. For the 3am leak so you do not raid the bag.
• In the wash / drying. These do not count as available.

If you also wrap with muslin, that is a sleep use with Lullaby Trust rules (thin fabric, hips able to move, stop at signs of rolling). Those wraps need the larger 60 × 60cm or 70 × 70cm squares, and they go into the wash after nights as well as days — add two extra to the rotation, do not invent a new official total.

How many go in the hospital bag versus the home stash?

Pack for the stay you expect, not for the first month at home. NCT names one square in the bag; NHS names squares and leaves the count to you. Two or three clean 60 × 60cm squares cover a typical short stay if you can wash or be brought more. Twins: NCT says times the baby column by two.

In shortOfficial pages name a muslin, not a number. Start from wash days and where squares live. About 4–6 if you wash often; about 6–8 for a mid-week rhythm; more only if laundry is weekly or you also wrap at night. There is no single kit total.
