How many silicone bibs do I need for weaning?
When does the NHS say meals — and bibs — start?
The NHS start-weaning page says wait until around 6 months, when baby can sit upright, hold their head steady and move food in the mouth. US ‘start solids’ posts that count bibs from 4 months do not match that timing.
NHS first solid foods lists kit for the mess: a high chair with a harness, soft spoons, a bowl, a first cup — and plastic or pelican bibs. It also says babies do not need three meals a day at the start. Your bib count should follow how many sittings you actually do, not a full-day menu from week one.
This page does not pick spoon-feeding versus baby-led weaning. Both sit on the NHS page. The count is how many wipe-clean bibs you need for the sittings you run.
How many wipe-clean bibs for one meal versus three?

| Sittings a day (NHS: start small) | Bibs if you rinse between meals | Bibs if you only wash at night |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tasting / first-foods sitting | 2 (today + spare) | 2–3 |
| 2 sittings | 2–3 | 3–4 |
| 3 meals | 3–4 (one dirty, one on, one spare) | 4–6 |
| 3 meals plus a snack you bib for | 4–5 | 5–7 |
Silicone pelicans wipe clean in the sink. That is why the left-hand column stays small: the same bib can serve lunch if breakfast was rinsed. The count jumps only if you will not rinse, or if one bib is always in a bag for a café sitting.
How do I run a wipe-and-wash routine?
- Rinse at the sink after the sitting Food in the catch pocket sets if you leave it. A rinse puts that bib back in the rotation the same day.
- Keep one clean spare on the high-chair hook The on-body bib can fail a popper or get dropped. The spare is the whole point of owning more than one.
- Machine-wash when the wipe is not enough Grease and strong colours need a 40°C cycle. If you skip the rinse, you need the higher column in the table.
- Park a travel bib in the changing bag That extra piece is why ‘2 at home’ becomes ‘3’ once you eat out. It is not a reason to buy a set of eight.
Do sleeved coveralls change the number?
A short silicone pelican covers the chest. A sleeved wipe-clean coverall is a different garment for bigger mess. If you use both, count them as two piles: 2–4 pelicans for everyday meals, and 1–2 sleeved coveralls if you want sleeves for the messiest sitting. Do not buy eight of each before you have seen how your baby eats.
- Pelican / catch-pocket silicone — this page’s main count.
- Sleeved coverall — add 1–2 if food travels up the arms.
- Cotton dribble bibs — still useful between meals for saliva; they are a teething count, not a weaning count.
What is this page not deciding?
It is not a first-foods menu, an allergen timetable, or a verdict on pouches versus home cooking. Those sit on the NHS weaning pages. It is not a high-chair or suction-bowl review. Bibs do not change whether baby is ready: the NHS wants the three readiness signs together from around 6 months, even if a jar says ‘from 4 months’.
In shortFollow NHS timing (around 6 months). Own 2 wipe-clean bibs at the first sitting, then 3–4 once you are on three meals and you rinse. More than that is spare-bag insurance, not a starter kit.
Questions parents ask
- Does the NHS say how many bibs to buy for weaning?
- No. It lists plastic or pelican bibs as part of the messy-meal kit and says to start around 6 months with small amounts, not three meals at once. The numbers here are a rinse-and-spare rotation.
- Can I use leftover newborn cotton bibs instead?
- You can for the first tastes. Once food is wet and colourful, cotton stays stained and wet against the chest. One silicone spare usually replaces a drawer of soaked terry bibs at mealtimes.
- Do I need a bib for baby-led weaning only?
- The NHS lists bibs because first foods are messy, whichever method you use. Baby-led sittings often throw more food; that may push you toward a sleeved coverall, not toward eight pelicans.
- When do I need more than four?
- If you will not rinse, if you eat out most days, or if two children share the same drawer. Otherwise four wipe-clean bibs plus a travel spare is a full three-meal set.
