Do you need a Moses basket and a next-to-me crib?
Do official lists require both products?
The Lullaby Trust expectant-parents page names a cot or Moses basket as the separate sleep space, then a portable sleep space — Moses basket, carry cot or travel cot — if you lack room for a cot or want to move between rooms. NHS Start for Life uses the same pair: cot or Moses basket. Neither page adds a next-to-me crib as a second must-buy.
Official pages do not declare a Moses basket safer than a next-to-me crib, or the other way round. They describe one clear, flat, firm sleep space in your room for the first six months.
How do portability, lifespan and floor space compare?
Shop blogs often sell 'Moses downstairs, next-to-me upstairs'. That is a layout preference. Put the three practical differences in one table and leave official ranking out of it.

When would a Moses basket alone cover nights?
If the basket and its stand fit beside the bed, the mattress is firm, flat and waterproof, and you can keep the space clear, The Lullaby Trust already treats that as a separate sleep space. You carry it to the living room for daytime sleeps instead of buying a second frame. You still need a cot plan for when the basket’s own size or movement limit is met — often before six months.
A Moses basket does not attach to the adult mattress. Night feeds mean lifting the baby out. That is effort, not a reason official pages give for adding a bedside crib.
When would a next-to-me crib alone cover nights?
If the crib fits the bed height (measure after any mattress topper), straps as the manual describes, and you accept the six-month / 9 kg / sit-up stop, you already have a room-share space. A Moses basket on top of that is a second portable, not a missing official item.
Which? price band for new bedside cribs on 28 April 2026 was usually £130–£360, with some models much higher. A Moses basket plus stand is often cheaper, and a cot in the bedroom can replace both if the room can take it. Cost is not a safer-sleep ranking.
Where does a pram carry cot sit in this buy?
The Lullaby Trust lists a carry cot as one optional portable space, and it asks a separate overnight question: does the manufacturer say it is suitable for overnight sleep? If that line is no, it is not a third must-buy and it is not a Moses-basket substitute. Do not add a pushchair seat to this decision. Seated units are outside this page.
What should a small UK bedroom actually hold?
- Measure the floor strip beside the bed: width of the product plus space to open drawers and to walk.
- Pick one overnight space that fits that strip for as much of the first six months as its manual allows — cot if it fits, otherwise Moses basket or next-to-me, not both unless you have a separate daytime-carry reason.
- If you cannot fit a cot in the bedroom, The Lullaby Trust’s portable list is the official alternative, not a downstairs Moses plus an upstairs crib as a pair of essentials.
- Keep the same-room rule: NHS and The Lullaby Trust want nights in your room for six months, not a second sleep space in the nursery.

- Brand FAQs and Which? usually keep bedside cribs to about six months, 9 kg, or sitting unaided. Many Moses baskets are outgrown earlier. Longer use is not a ranking of which product official pages prefer.
- Can we skip both and use only a pram carry cot at home?
- Only if the manufacturer’s overnight line is yes and The Lullaby Trust’s flat / firm / hood / apron checks are all yes. That is an approved alternative on their holiday page, not a default replacement for a cot or Moses basket.
