How do I match next-to-me crib height to my bed with a mattress topper?
What height band does my model claim?
Chicco’s Next2Me FAQ (27 August 2024) publishes mattress-height bands, not 'most UK beds'. Next2Me Air and Dream: adult mattress height 49–64 cm. Next2Me Magic: 51–66 cm. Folding feet are how that range attaches to a divan. Other brands print their own figures — Snüz listings commonly say the adult mattress top should sit level with the zip-down wall, up to a stated floor-to-mattress maximum. Copy the number from this manual.

How do I measure once the mattress topper is on?
Buying guides quote the bed as sold. A topper, a pillow-top, or a new mattress changes the number. Measure the stack you will actually sleep on.
- Make the adult bed as it will be at night Fit the mattress, the topper, and the usual protector. Do not measure a stripped base and 'add 4 cm later'.
- Measure floor to the top sleeping surface Drop a tape from the top fabric of the adult mattress (including topper) to the floor, at the side where the crib will sit. Write the centimetres down.
- Compare with the printed band If your figure is below the model’s minimum or above its maximum, that chassis does not match this bed-plus-topper. A different model, or removing the topper, is a product-fit question — not a 'raise the crib anyway' step.
- Set both crib legs to the same notch Chicco’s Forever instructions: the two feet must be at the same height in bedside mode. Raise or lower until the adult surface meets the manual’s level-or-higher line against the lowered side.
- Fasten the kit straps and repeat the maker’s contact check Artsana wording: pull the straps until the crib is in contact with the parents’ mattress and there is no space between the mattress and the product’s side. Re-check after the first night, when toppers compress.
What does the Chicco manual mean by level or higher?
The Next2Me Forever booklet (Artsana) is the clearest published line: in bedside-sleeper configuration the parents’ mattress must be aligned with, or at most higher than, the height of the crib’s side. A separate warning says the top rail next to the adult bed must not be higher than the adult mattress, to avoid the neck-catch hazard that sentence names. Which? buying copy talks about lining the baby’s mattress up with yours; the legal text is still the sheet in the box.
The Lullaby Trust’s bed-sharing research note (April 2026) says a bedside crib should be fitted correctly, with no gap between the crib and the adult mattress, and should meet BS EN 1130:2019. MayTally does not add a centimetre 'safe gap' of its own. The maker’s 'no space' check and that Lullaby Trust sentence are the two lines on this page.
What if the topper pushes us outside the printed band?
Then that model’s published range does not cover this bed. Options the manuals themselves give you are: choose a model whose band includes the new height, use a configuration the sheet allows (for example folding feet on a divan, if that is how the range reaches the band), or take the topper off the adult bed so the measurement falls back inside the band. Stacking extra blocks under the crib, or adding a second mattress in the crib, is not a Chicco-approved adjustment. The Forever warnings say do not use more than one mattress in the product and only to use the mattress sold or an Artsana-approved replacement.
Ottoman, sleigh and thick-topper beds fail this check often. Measure before the return window closes.
Can I put a topper on the crib mattress to even the heights?
No — not as a height hack. Chicco’s Forever sheet: do not use more than one mattress; do not add a second mattress. The Lullaby Trust mattress page wants a firm, flat surface with no raised or cushioned edges; a soft topper on the baby’s side works against that wording. Height matching is done by moving the crib frame, not by padding the baby’s mattress up to the adult pile.
When should I re-check the height and the straps?
- After the topper first compresses — memory foam and fibre toppers lose height in the first week.
- When you change adult bedding thickness — a winter duvet does not change mattress height; swapping the topper or adding a mattress protector with extra fill does.
- When you move house or swap rooms — a different bed base is a new measurement.
- Every time you undo the straps — Artsana tells you to restore the no-space condition before use.
In shortMeasure floor to the top of the adult mattress with the topper on. Stay inside the model’s centimetre band. Match the manual’s level-or-higher / no-space checks on both legs. Do not make up the difference with a second mattress in the crib.
Questions parents ask
- Do I include the duvet in the height measurement?
- No. Measure the sleeping surface the adult lies on — mattress plus topper plus thin protector. A duvet sits on top and is not the figure Chicco’s mattress-height band is written against. Keep adult bedding out of the crib, which is also The Lullaby Trust’s bedside-crib note.
- Our bed is 67 cm with the topper. Which Chicco Next2Me fits?
- Air and Dream stop at 64 cm; Magic stops at 66 cm on the 27 August 2024 FAQ. 67 cm is outside those three bands. Look up a model whose own sheet includes 67 cm, or remove height from the adult stack until you are back inside a printed range.
- The crib mattress sits a little lower than our mattress. Is that the Chicco line?
- Forever’s bedside line is about the adult mattress versus the lowered crib side: adult surface level with or higher than that side, and the top rail not higher than the adult mattress. Follow the diagrams in your booklet. MayTally does not invent a 'slightly lower is fine' allowance.
- Can I attach the crib if the straps will not reach under an ottoman base?
- Only if the manual lists that base type. Chicco’s FAQ mentions folding feet for divans on the Next2Me range. If the straps cannot take the route the booklet shows, bedside mode is not available on that bed. Stand-alone crib mode with the side up is a different configuration on the same sheet.
