Newborn vs 0-3 months baby clothes UK kg and cm?
Why do shops sell both Newborn and 0–3 months?
Age on the label is a shop shortcut. Each retailer publishes its own height and weight band. The NHS what you’ll need page tells you babies grow quickly and lists counts — six stretch suits, six vests, two light cardigans — not a kilogram or centimetre chart. That is why “Newborn versus 0–3 months” is a compare parents type, and why one blended UK chart is the wrong answer.
Mamas & Papas states that its table is the baby’s body measurement, not the measurement of the garment. Next’s help-centre table is a separate set of numbers under different names (First Size, Up to 1 Month, Up to 3 Months). Do not mix the two into one band.
What kg and cm do Mamas & Papas and Next print?
Swipe sideways for the full table
| Label on that chart | Height they list | Weight they list |
|---|---|---|
| Mamas & Papas — Tiny Baby | 44 cm | 2.3 kg |
| Mamas & Papas — Newborn | 50 cm | 3.2 kg |
| Mamas & Papas — Up to 1 month | 56 cm | 4.5 kg |
| Mamas & Papas — 0–3 months | 62 cm | 6.5 kg |
| Next — 5 lb | 44 cm | 2.3 kg |
| Next — First Size | 50 cm | 3.4 kg |
| Next — Up to 1 Month | 56 cm | 4.5 kg |
| Next — Up to 3 Months | 56–62 cm | 4.5–6 kg |
A baby who is 4.6 kg may still be “Up to 1 month” on Next’s table and already past Mamas & Papas Newborn (3.2 kg). The label on the packet in your hand is the one that counts.
How do I choose Newborn versus 0–3 months before birth?
- Treat NHS counts as the volume, not the size Six vests and six stretch suits is the national “enough to stay clean” list. Split that pile across sizes instead of buying twelve Newborn sleepsuits.
- Buy a small Newborn / First Size set Coming-home and first-week changes. On Mamas & Papas that is the 50 cm / 3.2 kg Newborn line; on Next it is First Size at 50 cm / 3.4 kg. Tiny Baby / 5 lb is a separate premature or small-birth line (both charts: 44 cm / 2.3 kg).
- Put the rest in 0–3 months / Up to 3 Months That is the size many full-term babies wear for more of the first season. On Mamas & Papas the body point is 62 cm / 6.5 kg; on Next the range is 56–62 cm / 4.5–6 kg. Do not assume those two labels fit the same baby.
- After birth, match weight and length to that brand’s chart Use the red-book weight and a length if you have one. If a footed sleepsuit is tight at the toes, size up in that brand — do not invent an average of the two tables.
Does the NHS say which size to buy?
No kilograms, no centimetres. NHS Best Start’s shopping list is the same idea: at least six sleepsuits or babygrows and four to six vests, plus two cardigans in wool or cotton rather than nylon. Some hospital leaflets add “newborn / first size” as a starting label for the bag you take in. That is still not a national kg/cm standard.
For sleep, the Lullaby Trust says many sleep bags are fitted by weight, not age, and that you should follow the maker’s guide. A roomy 0–3 month sleepsuit is a different product from a sleep bag sized in kilograms. Do not size a sleep bag by the vest drawer.
When has a baby outgrown Newborn in practice?
Use the brand chart first. Practical clues that a labelled Newborn or First Size is too small: poppers that will not meet under the nappy, red marks from cuffs, or feet pressed hard into a footed sleepsuit. Practical clues that 0–3 months is swimming: a neck that gapes so the shoulder slips off, or sleeves covering the hands on a suit that was not designed that way.
In shortIn short: read the kg and cm on the brand you are buying. Mamas & Papas Newborn is 3.2 kg; Next First Size is 3.4 kg; their “0–3 months” / “Up to 3 Months” lines are not the same band. Keep most of the NHS six-and-six in the larger label.
Questions parents ask
- Is 0–3 months just a bigger Newborn?
- On one brand, it is the next row on that brand’s table. Across brands, the weights differ. Next’s Up to 3 Months already starts at 4.5 kg, which is Mamas & Papas’ “Up to 1 month” weight, not its Newborn weight.
- Should I skip Newborn clothes altogether?
- Some larger babies never wear them. A small set still covers a hospital stay and the first week if your baby is on the Newborn / First Size row. Putting every gift in Newborn is the usual waste.
- Do I need Tiny Baby as well as Newborn?
- Only if you expect a small birth weight or the neonatal team asks for it. Both Mamas & Papas Tiny Baby and Next 5 lb sit at 44 cm / 2.3 kg on those charts — a different row from Newborn / First Size.
- Why do some sites publish one combined baby size chart?
- Those are editorial averages. They are not the Mamas & Papas table or the Next table. If a number is not on the retailer’s own guide, do not use it to order.
