What is the Baby Mailing Preference Service?

BMPS is a free service run with the Data & Marketing Association. It lets you register not to receive baby-related mailings. Companies that check the file are told your circumstances have changed and that you prefer not to get further baby-product post. MPS, which introduces BMPS, says the file is updated daily.

It is a postal register. It does not cancel a baby-club email list, an app notification or a phone call. Wandsworth Council’s junk-mail page puts it in one line: register with MPS for general junk mail, or Baby MPS for baby-related items.

How do I register with BMPS?

Registration is free. BMPS says you do it once and there is no renewal. You can register for yourself, or for a family member or friend who asked you to act for them.

   Open the official registration Go to bmpsonline.org.uk/registration. That is the DMA’s Baby MPS form, not a baby-club preference centre.

   Give the postal address that receives the catalogues BMPS’s fair-processing notice says they need your name, contact details and the postal address to put on the “Do Not Mail” register. The service only works if that address is the one on the envelope.

   Finish the steps and keep the confirmation The live form runs through several screens. Save the confirmation email or page. If catalogues continue from a named brand, you need that proof when you write to them.

   Update the file if you move The same notice says they must hold the correct address. Changes go to [email protected], or by post to BMPS, Rapier House, 40 Lambs Conduit Street, London, WC1N 3LJ, or by phone on 020 7291 3310.

BMPS is about baby post. If you also want fewer general catalogues, add MPS. If you want fewer marketing calls, add TPS as a separate extra. Neither replaces BMPS for baby-brand envelopes.

What will BMPS not stop?

MPS’s BMPS page is blunt: companies that are not members of the DMA and Baby MPS “may not be aware of your circumstances and may have to be notified directly by you.” That is the gap freebie round-ups skip.

• Email and app alerts. Club unsubscribe and an ICO marketing objection are the email tools. BMPS does not touch an inbox.
• Partners you already joined. A brand that has your address from an offer claim is a controller in its own right. Write to that brand even after you are on BMPS.
• Unaddressed door drops. “The Occupier” pizza leaflets and supermarket fliers sit outside MPS and BMPS. Council pages (Wandsworth is typical) point to a sticker and Royal Mail’s unaddressed opt-out.
• A made-up wait. BMPS says its file updates daily. It does not publish a statutory number of weeks before catalogues must stop. MPS, for general mail, says registration can take up to three months to show the full effect — that is MPS’s own figure, not a BMPS law.

What if baby catalogues still arrive after I register?

1. Read the envelope: named person versus “The Occupier”. Only the first is what BMPS is built for.
2. Write to the brand on the catalogue. Say you are on Baby MPS, give the address, and object to postal marketing. Keep a copy.
3. If they are a DMA licensee and still write, BMPS’s notice says they also handle complaints about unsolicited mail — [email protected] is the contact they publish.
4. For email that arrived with the catalogue, use that sender’s footer and, if needed, the ICO spam route. That is a different complaint.
