Are nappies more expensive per nappy at Tesco Express than Tesco Extra?
Is Express charging more for the same pack, or stocking a different pack?
Those are two different questions. A format premium is the same barcode costing more in Express than in Extra. A range gap is Express holding only a Pampers carry pack while Extra holds Fred & Flo jumbo boxes. Parents on Mumsnet often describe the second problem: the Express baby bay never shows the own-brand count they use at the big store, so they only ever see a small branded bag.
There is no official Tesco figure for 'nappies cost X% more in Express'. Inventing one percentage would mix those two effects. The method is to write down brand, size, count and £/each in each store in the same week.
What did Which? measure at Tesco Express — and did it include nappies?
Which? has twice published grocery-basket comparisons between Tesco Express and larger Tesco stores. Neither basket was a nappy aisle study.

The Mirror (22 March 2023) followed a Midlands shopper who photographed the same grocery lines five minutes apart: dishwasher tablets, tea, Weetabix, ketchup, butter and cheddar all cost more in Express than Extra. Again, no nappy SKU was in that list. Tesco told the Mirror that Express carries competitive own-brand lines and Clubcard Prices — which is a statement about the format, not a nappy unit-price table.
Which nappy packs does each format usually hold?
Tesco Extra and Superstore baby aisles typically run Fred & Flo taped nappies and pants in several counts, plus branded jumbo and carry packs. Express stores are smaller, so the baby bay is often a short run of Pampers or similar carry packs. Tesco.com listed these snapshots on 10 September 2026 — useful as a format contrast, not as your local Express ticket.

If Express only has the 25-count carry pack and Extra has the 48-count Fred & Flo, you are not looking at 'the same nappy plus 11%'. You are looking at 22p versus 6p on different products. Walk the Extra aisle before treating Express as the household price.
How do I compare an Express ticket with an Extra ticket?
- Photograph both tickets in the same week Include the selling price, any Clubcard Price, the unit line, and the pack count on the bag. Express tickets can omit the unit line if the store is a 'small shop' under 280m² — the Price Marking Order exemption for pre-packed constant-quantity goods.
- Write brand, size and count in one row Example columns: store format, brand, size, tapes or pants, count, till price, £/each. If the barcode differs, stop calling it a format premium.
- Divide till price by count if £/each is missing GOV.UK defines the unit price for goods sold by number as the VAT-inclusive final price for one item. Your division is the same arithmetic the ticket should show.
- Only then look at Clubcard Express does run Clubcard Prices. A yellow Express price on a carry pack can still sit well above Extra own-brand pence. Do not stop at 'Clubcard applied'.
When is the Express pack still the cheaper trip?
Unit price is not the same as trip cost. A 6p Extra nappy is wasted if getting there means a bus fare, a lost lunch break, or a second shop for milk. Express pence is the price of not running out tonight.
- Emergency count. One 19- or 25-count carry pack at Express covers a weekend. It does not set the monthly rate.
- Same barcode check. If Express and Extra share a Fred & Flo barcode, compare those two £/each figures — that is the true format gap for that SKU.
- Online Extra range. Tesco.com and Click+Collect from a large store often show the jumbo counts Express cannot hold. Delivery or collect fees belong in the trip cost, not in the shelf pence.
- Do not invent a habit. Paying Express pence every week because Extra is 'too far' is a household choice, not a hidden Tesco nappy tariff.

Questions parents ask
- Does Tesco Express stock Fred & Flo nappies?
- Sometimes a short own-brand run, often not the jumbo counts Extra holds. Tesco's Aldi Price Match terms say the full matched range is for selected larger stores, with only a selected everyday set in Express. Treat Fred & Flo jumbo as an Extra / Superstore / online SKU until you see the box in that Express.
- Why is there no unit price on my Express nappy ticket?
- Shops with a relevant floor area of 280m² or less are exempt from showing a unit price on constant-quantity packs under the Price Marking Order. Many Express stores sit near that size. Divide the till price by the count on the pack.
- Is the Which? 11% Express figure the extra I pay on nappies?
- No. That figure is from a 42-item grocery basket in 2024, for Clubcard holders. It was not a nappy study and it is not a Tesco nappy surcharge. Use it only as evidence that Express groceries can cost more, then read this week's nappy tickets.
- Do Clubcard Prices work in Tesco Express?
- Tesco has said Express offers Clubcard Prices on thousands of lines. Scan the card and use the yellow selling price ÷ count. A Clubcard carry pack can still be several times the Extra own-brand £/each.
