What does a wearable sock baby monitor measure, and is it worth the cost?
What is a wearable sock baby monitor and what does it measure?
A wearable sock monitor is three parts: a soft fabric sock, a small sensor that slots into it, and a base station that sits in your room. Owlet's UK support pages describe the sensor as having "light emitters and a detector that measures Pulse Rate, Oxygen Saturation, and movement", sending that data to the base station by Bluetooth. The base station decides when to notify you with lights and sound; if it also has Wi-Fi, it relays the data to an app on your phone.
The measuring technique is pulse oximetry — the same principle as the clip a nurse puts on your finger. The MHRA's guidance on pulse oximeters explains it in one sentence: "these devices work by shining a light into the skin and measuring how this is absorbed by the blood to estimate how much oxygen is present." Oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood absorb red and infrared light differently; the sensor watches the pulsing of blood through the foot and works out a percentage — the SpO2 — and a pulse rate from the rhythm.
- It measures: an estimate of blood-oxygen saturation (a percentage), pulse rate (beats per minute), and movement. Owlet's app also derives sleep state and trends from these.
- It does not measure: breathing. A sock has no way to see the chest move or air move. Nor does it measure temperature or position.
- It notifies when: the numbers leave a fixed range. Owlet's UK-published thresholds are oxygen below 80% and pulse under 50 or over 220 beats per minute; those presets are not adjustable by the parent.
- It also notifies about itself: Owlet's medium-priority (yellow) notification means the sock is loose, off, the wrong size, or out of range of the base station for 60 seconds — a fit-and-signal message, not a health one.
How accurate are oxygen and pulse readings from consumer sock monitors?
Pulse oximetry is a well-established hospital technique, and the MHRA describes it as such — with two caveats that apply as much to a baby's foot as an adult's finger.
First, it is an estimate with a tolerance, not a laboratory value. The standard the MHRA references (BS EN ISO 80601-2-61) requires the difference between oximeter and true value to be below 4% (root-mean-square) across the 70–100% range, and the MHRA notes that "below 70% SpO2 the accuracy falls". Its conclusion: "Although pulse oximetry will not give a precise value of oxygen saturation, it is useful for following trends." Owlet's UK page claims accuracy "within +/- 3% of gold-standard arterial blood gas measurements"; that is the maker's statement about its own testing.
Second, the number is only as good as the signal. The MHRA lists the factors that alter a reading: "low perfusion, movement, nail polish, henna dye, tattoos, probe mispositioning, ambient lighting hitting the sensor", and notes darker skin pigmentation "may cause an overestimate". For a baby, that list translates into the next section.
The MHRA's guidance is written for healthcare professionals and states that it "does not recommend that members of the public use oximeters at home unless they have been advised to do so by a qualified clinician, have been shown how to take an accurate measurement, and they are providing results for clinical review." Consumer baby socks are sold outside that setting, which is exactly why the interpretation of any reading belongs with your health visitor, GP or NHS 111 — not with this site or a product page.
What is the difference between a consumer monitor and medical monitoring in the UK?
Marketing uses "wellness", "reassurance", "medically certified" and "hospital-grade" loosely. UK law does not. The MHRA's guidance for users of medical devices (updated 2 April 2025) sets out three things to know before buying any sock, pad or camera that claims to watch vital signs:
- Most of these products are medical devices in law. Because they "offer to identify, monitor, or, in some cases treat a medical condition", the MHRA's view is that they "meet the legal definition of a medical device" under the UK Medical Devices Regulations 2002 — so a conformity assessment and a CE or UKCA mark. Ordinary audio and video monitors that only let you listen or watch are excluded.
- A disclaimer does not opt a product out. A maker saying a product "is not a medical device … does not automatically mean that a product would not be considered a medical device".
- A mark is not an endorsement. The MHRA "does not carry out assessments or approve medical devices" and does not endorse any. The mark means the maker (and, for higher-risk classes, an approved body) has declared the device meets the requirements for its stated intended use.
That is why the intended use statement matters more than the adjectives. Owlet UK's for the Dream Sock: "routine, in-home surveillance of healthy infants" aged 0–18 months and 2.5–13.6 kg, with notifications "intended to supplement the decision by caregivers to seek additional guidance for medical care" and "not intended to replace traditional methods of diagnosis and/or treatment". It excludes infants "previously diagnosed with chronic cardiovascular and/or respiratory conditions". A hospital monitor prescribed by a neonatal team is a different device, for a different baby, with a clinician reading it.
The Lullaby Trust advises looking for a CE or UKCA medical device mark ("MD" on the packaging). The monitors it offers through its Care of Next Infant programme are simple movement monitors, not pulse-oximetry types, because in its experience heart-rate and oxygen detail "can add to anxiety rather than offer peace of mind".
Why can sock-monitor readings change or fail?
Put the MHRA's list of factors next to a real baby and most of them are ordinary bedtime events:

Because fit is the biggest controllable factor, do the fit check every night before you trust the base station's green light:
- Pick the size from the maker's chart, not by eye Owlet ships two sizes (four socks, left and right). Too tight constricts, too loose lets light in — the MHRA's words for finger probes apply exactly.
- Seat the sensor in the sock The dome pushes through the hole and the notch on the sensor lines up with the notch on the sock.
- Line the notch up with the little toe and fasten snugly Owlet's guide uses the sock notch to align the sensor to the pinky toe. If the base station shows yellow within a minute, take it off and start again rather than adjusting on the foot.
- Cover it if the room is bright Footed pyjamas or a normal sock over the top is fine per Owlet and blocks stray light.
- Charge the sensor every day and wash the sock every two weeks Owlet quotes up to 16 hours when new, with a 20-minute charge giving about 8 hours; a blue notification means 50 minutes left. Owlet UK advises spot-washing the sock and sensor fortnightly to avoid skin irritation — check the foot each morning.
Is a sock monitor useful for healthy newborns — or for anxious new parents?
Those are two different questions, and the second is the one most buyers are really asking.
For a healthy newborn, the honest position is the Lullaby Trust's: no monitor of any kind has been shown to prevent SIDS, and safer-sleep practice is what reduces risk. A sock adds information. Whether that information helps depends entirely on the adult reading it. Owlet's own intended-use wording — surveillance of healthy infants, to supplement a decision to seek guidance — describes a device that reports, not one that protects.
For anxious parents, it cuts both ways and you know yourself best. Some parents sleep better with a green light in the room. The Lullaby Trust's experience from CONI is that pulse and oxygen numbers can increase anxiety, which is why it offers simple movement monitors instead. A useful test: if a yellow "sock fell off" notification at 2 a.m. would leave you calm once you had refitted it, the sock may suit you. If it would keep you awake watching the app, a yes/no movement pad — or an ordinary monitor and the room-sharing the Lullaby Trust advises for six months — may serve you better. For comparison, a Babysense 7 movement pad was £80.99 (was £107.99) on Babysense UK's store the same day, and a non-Wi-Fi video monitor with a parent unit started at £54.99 at Mamas & Papas — see video monitors under £100. A second-hand sock lowers the price but inherits a used, non-replaceable sensor battery and possibly someone else's account; run the model through the recall and reset checks and factory-reset before use.
What should you do if a sock monitor reports an unexpected reading?
Follow the maker's instructions for that notification and, for anything about your baby rather than the sock, the Lullaby Trust's published plan: check your baby — look for chest movement, feel for breathing with your cheek, try gently rousing them, never shake; if they do not respond, dial 999 on speaker; if they respond but you are worried, contact NHS 111, your midwife, GP or health visitor. Owlet's own wording is that the Dream Sock "is not a substitute for adult supervision or safe sleep practices" and that carers should not rely solely on its notifications.
What this site will not do is tell you what an 85% or a 190 bpm means. Those are clinical questions; the MHRA's guidance says home oximetry results should go to a clinician for review, and that is where they should go.

In shortA wearable sock is a consumer pulse oximeter for the foot. It estimates oxygen and pulse, not breathing; its readings move with fit, movement and cold feet; and in the UK it should carry a CE or UKCA medical-device mark. At about £300 it is worth it only for parents who want those numbers, will do the nightly fit check, and will keep safer-sleep practice exactly as it was. For everyone else, a simple movement monitor or no monitor at all is a defensible choice — and the Lullaby Trust's, too.
Questions parents ask
- Does a sock monitor detect breathing?
- No. It estimates blood-oxygen saturation and pulse rate by pulse oximetry, and senses movement. Breathing itself is not measured. Products that claim breathing detection use a movement pad or a camera watching a pattern — a different technology with its own limits.
- Is the Owlet Dream Sock a medical device in the UK?
- Owlet UK describes it as medically certified and publishes an intended use for healthy infants aged 0–18 months weighing 2.5–13.6 kg. The MHRA's general position is that most baby breathing and movement monitors meet the legal definition of a medical device and should carry a CE or UKCA mark. Check the packaging of the exact model.
- Why does the sock keep giving 'fit' notifications?
- Owlet says the most common reason is the wrong sock size, a misplaced sock or the sock coming off; movement and ambient light are the next. Refit using the size guide, align the notch with the little toe, and cover with footed pyjamas if the room is bright. Recurring notifications with a good fit are a reason to contact the maker.
- Will it work if my Wi-Fi goes down?
- Owlet states the base station is the primary source of notifications and that health notifications still sound if Wi-Fi disconnects, because the sensor talks to the base station over Bluetooth. The app, remote viewing and history need Wi-Fi.
- Can I buy a second-hand sock monitor?
- You can, but the sensor battery is non-replaceable and ages with use, the fabric socks are the previous baby's, and the base station may still be tied to another account. Factory-reset it, check the model on the GOV.UK recall list, and budget for the fact that it may not last a full 18 months.
