When should I size up from a newborn sleepsuit in the UK?
What are the fit signs that a newborn sleepsuit is too small?
Use the garment, not the birthday. Parent threads often mention feet at the end of the suit at a few weeks; that is a length sign, not a milestone. The useful checks are mechanical:
- Toes press the end seam when the legs are gently straightened, or the fabric is shiny across the top of the foot.
- Poppers strain across the nappy or leave a red line on the tummy after a change.
- The crotch will not close without pulling the vest or sleepsuit down from the shoulders.
- Sleeves sit well above the wrist on a long-sleeved suit that used to reach the hand.
NCT repeats College of Foot Health advice to watch all-in-ones so they do not become restrictive on the foot, and to change size (or cut the toe off that suit) when they do. That is a fit note, not a developmental score.
How do I check a sleepsuit against the shop chart?
- Lay the baby flat and look at the feet Undo the leg poppers, straighten the legs gently, and see whether the toes sit against the seam. If they do, the height row is used up even if the chest still looks roomy.
- Close every popper once, without a fight If the nappy-line poppers only meet when you stretch the fabric, the chest or rise has run out. That is a weight or girth sign.
- Read that shop's next row in cm and kg Next First Size is 50 cm / 3.4 kg; the next printed row is Up to 1 month at 56 cm / 4.5 kg. Mamas & Papas Newborn is 50 cm / 3.2 kg, then Up to 1 month at 56 cm / 4.5 kg.
- Move the everyday suits first Keep one looser daytime outfit if you like, but overnight all-in-ones are the ones that show toe pressure first. Swap those to the next label.

Should I follow weight or length if they disagree?
On a footed sleepsuit, length usually shows first. The suit has to cover crown to heel. A baby can still be inside Next's 3.4 kg First Size weight and already past 50 cm, which is why toes hit the seam before poppers complain.
If the feet still have room but the poppers strain, you have hit the weight or nappy-rise side of the same row. Either sign is enough to open the next label. Do not wait for both.
John Lewis prints Newborn up to 56 cm / 4.1 kg — a longer, heavier cap than Next First Size. A suit that is tight in Next First Size can still match John Lewis Newborn. Compare the chart on the brand you are holding.
Does six weeks on the calendar mean the newborn suit is finished?
No. Six weeks is a common anecdote, not a UK sizing rule. Next's First Size row is a 50 cm / 3.4 kg body. Some babies pass it in a fortnight; some still close those poppers at two months. The NHS says babies grow quickly and that a small set of clothes is enough — it does not give a week when Newborn ends.
In shortSize up when toes press the seam or poppers strain. Then read the next kg/cm row on that shop — Next's step is Up to 1 month at 56 cm / 4.5 kg, not 'one month old'. The calendar is not the chart.
Questions parents ask
- The feet are at the end but the body looks fine. Do I still size up?
- Yes for a footed sleepsuit. The height row is spent. Move to the next label on that shop, or use a footless suit plus socks as a temporary fit while you wash the longer size.
- Do I size up vests on the same day as sleepsuits?
- Often the vest still closes after the footed suit has run out, because a vest does not have to reach the heel. Check the crotch poppers on the vest separately. You can hold a vest size a little longer than a footed sleepsuit.
- Is a tight sleepsuit a safer-sleep issue?
- This page only covers clothing fit: toes, poppers and the shop's cm/kg row. For how to dress for sleep, room temperature and bedding, use The Lullaby Trust and NHS dressing pages — they are separate from the hangtag.
- George First Size still fits at 4 kg. Is that the same as Next First Size?
- No. George First Size lists up to 4.1 kg / 56 cm. Next First Size lists 3.4 kg / 50 cm. At 4 kg you have already left the Next First Size row and are on, or past, Next Up to 1 month on weight.
