Zip swaddle bag or muslin wrap: what to buy in the UK?
What does the Lullaby Trust describe if you swaddle at all?
The charity does not pick a brand. If you swaddle, the swaddling page describes lightweight material such as a thin muslin or thin cot sheet, no extra bedding over the wrap, fabric not above the shoulders, and wiggle room around the hips so the legs can bend. Tight hips are linked to developmental dysplasia of the hip. NCT repeats that thin-fabric and hip-room wording.
A zip bag (Tommee Tippee Swaddlebag, GroSnug-style) is sold as the easy newborn buy: lay the baby in and zip. That is a shop convenience. It is not a Lullaby Trust product endorsement. The same stop rule applies: arms wrapped inside end when the baby shows signs of rolling. How fabric coming loose and the stop point work is on the stop-swaddling guide — this page is only which SKU to put in the basket.
Official wording is thin fabric, hips able to move, back sleeping, and the maker's weight label. A zip does not change those rules. This is not a wrapping tutorial.
What do you actually put in the basket?

| SKU | Typical UK price | What you are buying | When it leaves the sleep kit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin muslin squares (about 60 × 60cm) | Tesco Fred & Flo white 3-pack 60 × 60cm £6; patterned 3-pack £5 | The fabric the Lullaby Trust names; also wiping, feeding, pram shade | Swaddling stops at rolling; the squares stay in the changing bag |
| Zip swaddle bag (Swaddlebag-style, 0–3 months) | Tommee Tippee official site from about £19.49–£19.99 per bag | No wrap skill; labelled weight band (0–3 months often 3.2–6.1kg) | Outgrown at the next weight band or at the first signs of rolling |
| Next zip size (3–6 months) if you stay on bags | Another ~£20 per bag | A second short-use garment | Same rolling stop — you may never wear this size arms-in |
What do you outgrow, and what stays in the kit?
A zip bag is a short-life sleep garment. Tommee Tippee's own 0–3 month band is 7–13lb 8oz / 3.2–6.1kg and up to 62cm. The 3–6 month band starts at 6.1kg. Either band ends as a swaddle the day rolling signs start — which can be before 6.1kg.
Muslin squares are kit that remains. After you stop swaddling they still cover milk, nappy leaks and the changing bag. That is why a cheaper muslin stack can outlast two zip sizes on cost, even if you never learn a tight wrap.
- Learn-to-wrap cost. Time and practice; fabric is a few pounds per three-pack.
- Zip-bag cost. About £20 per size, plus a spare if you wash overnight, then an arms-out bag anyway.
- Small-baby threads. A 0–3 month zip still has a minimum weight. Below that, thin muslin or a thin sheet is the fabric official pages already describe.
How do hips, tog and weight labels decide the buy?
If you buy a zip bag, read the same three lines you would on any sleep garment:
- Weight, not the hanger age. Do not zip a baby who is under the minimum kilograms into a bag with a loose neck.
- Hips can move. Official advice is a natural, bent-leg position. A "hip-healthy" hangtag is a brand claim; the test is still movement at the hip.
- Thin and cool enough. Lullaby Trust: minimum clothing under a swaddle, check the neck or chest, no blanket on top. Match any tog to the room. The NHS lists 1.0 tog for rooms of 20–24°C and 0.5 tog for 24–27°C on commercial bags.
If you buy muslin, pick thin cotton large enough to wrap without stacking blankets — typically 60 × 60cm or 70 × 70cm, not the 30 × 30cm wipe squares. Do not use a thick cellular or fleece as the wrap; the Lullaby Trust says not to swaddle with blankets.
In shortOfficial pages describe thin muslin or a thin sheet, not a named zip bag. A Swaddlebag-style zip is a paid shortcut with a short weight life. Muslin is cheaper and stays in the kit after rolling. Follow hips, weight and the rolling stop — not a brand crown.
Questions parents ask
- Do I need a zip bag if I already have muslin squares?
- No. The Lullaby Trust's fabric line is already thin muslin or a thin cot sheet. A zip bag is optional if you do not want to wrap. You still need an arms-out bag or tucked cellular once swaddling stops.
- Can I swaddle with a cellular blanket instead of muslin?
- The Lullaby Trust says to use thin muslin or a thin cot sheet and not to swaddle with blankets, because the baby could overheat. Keep the cellular for feet-to-foot tucking after you stop wrapping, if that is your NHS bedding choice.
- What if the 0–3 month zip bag is still big on my baby?
- Use the maker's minimum weight. If the baby is under it, the neck opening can be too wide. Thin muslin sized to the baby is the official fabric description for that gap.
- Is a zip bag a sleeping bag I keep after rolling?
- Only if the maker's arms-out mode still matches the weight label and you have stopped wrapping the arms. Many families still buy a plain 0–6 month bag. Count the zip swaddle as a separate, short-use SKU.
