How to find the date of manufacture on a child car seat

Where do UK seats hide the manufacture date?

Makers put the date on the moulded shell so it stays with the restraint if the cover is washed or lost. Child Car Seats asks you to check the manufacturer's advice about how old a seat should be; you cannot do that without the dated mark. RoSPA notes that UK seats are not marked with an expiry date, so what you usually find is a manufacture date, not a printed "expires on" line.

What do the three common date formats look like?

• Printed calendar date. Day, month and year in figures, sometimes as YYYY-MM-DD. This is the easiest to copy into a notes app.
• Moulded clock stamps. Circles with 1–12 for the month, tick marks for the day, and a two-digit year arrow. See how to read a clock date stamp.

US consumer-care pages for the same brand names often show MM/DD/YYYY. A UK-bought Dorel / Maxi-Cosi or Joie seat may not use that layout. Read the digits as the UK manual and the label in front of you present them, not as a US help article presents them.

How do I search the seat without missing a mark?

   Take the cover off only as far as the manual allows You need the hard plastic in view. Do not cut or unpick load-bearing parts. Photograph before you unclip anything so you can put the cover back on the same way.

   Work underside, then back, then sides Tip the seat or base (on a clean floor) and photograph the whole underside. Then the back face. Then each ISOFIX side. Then any panel under the headrest or harness.

Is the orange approval label the manufacture date?

No. The orange (or white) UN label shows the approval regulation — GOV.UK requires a capital E in a circle and R129 or ECE R44. It may show a mass group, a height range and an approval number. It does not replace the production date.

Child Car Seats asks you to confirm the seat meets R44.04 or i-Size and to check how old the maker says the seat should be. Those are two different labels and two different jobs.

What if I cannot find any date?

A missing, painted-over or scraped-off production mark means you cannot apply the manufacturer's years and you cannot match a batch line in a notice. Child Car Seats already treats missing instructions and an unknown history as reasons not to accept a second-hand seat. A missing date is in the same family of gaps.
