What is the true cost of a nappy library deposit and return postage?

Why is a cheap headline hire so large at checkout?

Shops advertise the keep-fee (sometimes “from £5” or “from £10”). The card payment is keep-fee plus a deposit that covers loss and damage while a box worth hundreds of pounds is in your house. The Nappy Lady states the true value of its 30-day kit as over £500. Until that box is checked back in, the deposit is their money, not yours to spend.

What is the deposit actually for?

Every named T&C we opened treats the deposit as security, not as part of the hire fee.

• Missing pieces. The Nappy Lady takes the full RRP of a lost item from the deposit, even if you qualified for the £180 credit after a £150 order. Paper liners are the usual exception.
• Damage beyond wear. Stains are often allowed (Friendly Eco: stains are not damage). Rips, torn PUL or deliberate damage are not. Liverpool holds £100 “to cover any damages”.
• Late or incomplete return. The deposit stays until the list is checked. Mini Hippo says the deposit is already in the checkout price and comes back only when the nappies are received in full and in good condition.
• Cashflow. For two to eight weeks you are without £29–£150. That is why a “£5 hire” can still need a £185 payment.

Volunteer libraries use the same shape at lower numbers. Central Bedfordshire: £15 + £60. Wealden District Council's trial kit is free to borrow with a £25 deposit. Torfaen's partner library: £10 + £25. Collection is common, so postage is zero if you can get there.

Who pays outbound and return postage?

Postal hire is a two-way parcel. Providers rarely publish a live Royal Mail or courier price on the hire page, so this table is about who is on the hook, not a made-up stamp cost.

1. Outbound. Tj's folds delivery to you into the £25 keep-fee. Friendly Eco offers collection or £5 post. The Nappy Lady dispatches by next-day courier as part of the £185. Mini Hippo uses signed-for Royal Mail; Norwich collection is free.
2. Return. The Nappy Lady: “the cost of returning the kit is paid by the hirer” and it asks for a next-day trackable courier so the 30-day clock still works. Friendly Eco: tracked post with minimum £50 insurance, your cost. Tj's: return at your expense. Mini Hippo: you organise tracked post; the parcel stays your responsibility until it arrives.
3. Insurance and proof. Friendly Eco names a £50 cover minimum. Mini Hippo wants proof of postage dated on or before the end date. A cheap untracked bag that goes missing is usually treated as a lost kit — that is a deposit conversation.
4. Collection hires skip both legs. Liverpool, Cloth Bums' Stotfold prices, and most UK Nappy Network in-person pins have no postage line if you collect and return.

What late-day and extension fees sit on top?

The hire clock is short. Missing the end date is how a cheap trial becomes expensive.

How do I add this up before I book?

   Treat the deposit as frozen cash It should come back after a complete, on-time return. It is not a discount on the nappies unless the shop's buy-to-reduce-hire terms say so.
