Why is baby monitor talk-back not working?
Is a silent intercom the same as a broken speaker?
Often not. Talk-back is a one-way broadcast from the parent unit (or phone) to the camera speaker. The picture can stay up while the talk path is blocked by mute, the wrong camera view, a missing button-hold, or a phone that has refused microphone permission. Treat a dead intercom as a link and settings check before you assume the hardware has failed.

| What you notice | What the maker describes | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Picture is fine; baby cannot hear you | VTech: hold TALK; talk-back does not work in multi-CAM — press VIEW for one camera | Hold Talk and switch to a single camera |
| You speak and the nursery audio vanishes | Motorola PIP1710 Connect: whilst using Talk Back you cannot hear your baby | Release or tap Talk off; that mute is by design |
| High-pitched squeal when you talk | VTech and BT: parent and baby units too close (keep at least 1 metre) | Move the handset away and turn the volume down |
| App talk-back is silent | Motorola Nursery / Hubble: the phone must allow the app to use the microphone | iOS or Android Settings → the app → Microphone on |
| No sound either way | VTech: vibration / vibe alert can mute the speaker; volume may be on the lowest step | Turn vibe off; raise volume above the first notch |
How do I check mute, VOX and the Talk button?
Work through the parent unit first. A Wi-Fi app is a second talk path with its own mute and permissions. VOX (voice-activated screen) can hide audio until a cry crosses the sensitivity line — that is a different fault from a dead intercom, and it is not a newborn-VOX setup guide.
- Confirm the radio link If the parent unit says No Link, flashes the LINK lamp, or beeps for a lost camera, restore the picture first. Talk-back cannot ride a dropped link.
- Hold Talk the way the model expects VTech manuals: press and hold TALK and speak toward the parent microphone, then release. Motorola PIP11-style units: press and hold the back / two-way key. Motorola PIP1710 Connect: tap Talk on the menu bar, then tap again when finished. A tap on a hold-to-talk model does nothing.
- Leave multi-camera view VTech support for VM346: the Talk feature does not work in multi-CAM mode. Press VIEW (or the single-camera menu) so only one baby unit is selected.
- Undo mute and vibe alert Raise speaker volume. If a mute icon is on, unmute. VTech audio models: when vibration / vibe alert is on, the speaker is turned off — set vibe to OFF in the menu.
- Separate the units Keep the parent unit at least 1 metre from the camera. Closer than that, both VTech and BT describe feedback squeal; some models also mute the parent speaker while Talk is down so you do not hear the loop.
- If you use a phone app Open the phone’s privacy settings and allow microphone access for Hubble Connected or Motorola Nursery. The PIP1710 Connect guide lists this as the first fix when “Talk back does not work”.
Motorola’s own line is push-to-talk, not a full-duplex phone call. Official records show the nursery audio is cut while you speak. That is documented behaviour, not proof the speaker has failed.
Why does talk-back cut the baby audio or squeal?
Two design rules collide. First, most nursery intercoms are half-duplex: the parent microphone takes the channel, so the camera’s mic is muted until you let go. The Motorola PIP1710 Connect guide states this in one sentence — you will not hear the baby during Talk Back. Second, if the handset is in the same room as the camera, the camera speaker feeds the camera mic and you get a squeal.
- VTech parent speaker mute. VM3261-class manuals: the parent unit speaker is muted during voice broadcast and a mute icon appears; sound from the baby unit resumes after TALK is released.
- Minimum gap. VTech hearing-protection notes and BT help both put the floor at about 1 metre / 3 feet. Move further if the squeal continues, or turn VOL− down.
- Wrong room, weak link. If Talk works only when you stand in the hallway, the units are at the edge of range. That is a link problem, not a failed talk chip.
Which? lists two-way talk-back as a common extra on the LeapFrog and VTech models it has tested. Presence on the spec sheet does not mean the intercom stays open both ways at once.
What if the Hubble or Nursery app has no intercom?
On a Connect hybrid, the handset and the app are separate talk paths. A working parent-unit picture does not prove the phone can speak. The Motorola PIP1710 Connect troubleshooting table points at phone microphone permission first. Hubble Connected’s setup notes also ask for a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band and for the phone, camera and router to sit within about a metre during pairing — a failed pair can leave live view on the handset and a mute intercom on the phone.
If the handset talk-back works and the app does not, keep using the parent unit while you fix permissions and Wi-Fi. If neither path talks, go back to the link, mute and single-camera checks rather than buying a new camera.
Does a working intercom change how my baby should sleep?
No. The Lullaby Trust is clear that monitors, including two-way talk, are not a substitute for safer-sleep practice: a clear, flat, firm sleep surface, baby on their back, in the same room as you for the first six months. There is no research showing monitors prevent SIDS. Keep mains cables out of the cot and fix the camera so it cannot fall in.
In shortHold Talk (or tap, if the Motorola screen says so), leave multi-cam view, keep a one-metre gap, unmute vibe-alert, and grant the app a microphone. Still silent after a power-cycle and a restored LINK lamp: contact the maker with the model code from the label — not the marketing name.
Questions parents ask
- Why can I not hear my baby while I am talking?
- On Motorola PIP1710 Connect and similar push-to-talk units the parent speaker is muted for the whole talk session. VTech manuals say the same during TALK. Release the key or tap Talk off; nursery audio should return. That cut is written into the guide, not a fault on its own.
- Does VTech talk-back work with two cameras on screen?
- VTech’s VM346 support page says the Talk feature does not work in multi-CAM mode. Switch to a single camera with VIEW (or the single-CAM menu), then hold TALK. Patrol or split view is for watching, not for the intercom.
- The units squeal when I press Talk. Have I broken them?
- VTech and BT both describe high-pitched feedback when the parent unit is too close to the baby unit. Move them at least one metre apart, preferably into another room, and turn the parent volume down. Feedback is a placement issue, not a recall test.
- The Hubble app will not talk but the parent unit will. What next?
- Treat them as two products. Enable microphone access for Hubble Connected or Motorola Nursery, keep the phone on the 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi (not mobile data) if you are pairing, and retry. The handset intercom can stay in use while the app is being fixed.
