Can you wear a Nanit breathing band over a sleeping bag?
What does Nanit say about sleeping bags versus swaddles?
Two official lines get mashed together on forums. Nanit’s UK starter-pack copy says the Band fits comfortably over most PJs and sleeping bags, and — in the same pack — use either Swaddle or Breathing Band, not both together. Nanit support describes the Band as going over existing pyjamas or a sleeping bag, and the Swaddle as the separate Breathing Wear piece for younger babies who are still wrapped.

| What the baby is wearing | Band on top? | Why, in Nanit’s words |
|---|---|---|
| Thin pyjamas or vest | Yes — this is the how-to default | Dress, then layer the Band; choose a print that does not clash with the Breathing Wear pattern |
| Most sleeping bags (Grobag-style zip bags with free arms) | Yes, if the Band sits under the arms and the pattern stays visible | UK copy: over most sleeping bags; camera must see the pattern |
| Nanit’s own Breathing Wear Swaddle | No — pick one product | UK starter pack: use either Swaddle or Band, not both |
| A conventional swaddle that binds the arms | Not in line with Band instructions | Band must wrap the torso under the arms so it cannot ride up; bound arms block that wrap |
| Thick / quilted bag or bulky snowsuit | Often no usable reading | Nanit Sleep Wear FAQ: thick garments or sleeping bags can stop motion being detected |
How do I put the band on over a sleeping bag?
- Zip the bag so the arms are free The Band’s flaps have to pass under each arm and stick to the other side. If the bag’s shoulders or a wrap stops that path, you are not following Nanit’s how-to.
- Lay the band, logo up, and centre the baby Nanit’s how-to: baby on their back on the band, centred on the logo; left flap under the right arm, right flap under the left.
- Two-finger gap They ask for space to slide two fingers between band and chest — not cinched, not sliding.
- Show the pattern to the camera Start a Breathing Motion Monitoring session only when the printed pattern is in clear sight of the Pro camera, with nothing covering it. A folded bag flap or muslin over the chest defeats the system.
Nanit’s Sleep Wear FAQ: place the Band around the torso and under the arms so it stays secure — they warn that a loose band can be a suffocation or strangulation hazard. That is their wording, not a MayTally product test.
What about a thick Grobag or a quilted bag?
Nanit sells its own Breathing Wear sleeping bags (the pattern is printed on the bag). A plain thick bag is different: the same FAQ says avoid thick garments or sleeping bags because thick fabric can hide motion. If the pattern is under a padded layer the camera cannot see, breaths per minute will not be reliable. Solutions in their system are a thinner bag with the Band on top and visible, or a Breathing Wear bag instead of a Band — not a homemade window cut in the fabric.
TOG, room temperature and whether a bag is the right warmth sit with The Lullaby Trust’s safer-sleep advice, not with this placement page.
Does this decide whether the bag or the band is the right sleep setup?
No. This page only repeats Nanit’s wrap-under-the-arms and pattern-in-view rules. The Lullaby Trust says there is no research evidence that monitors prevent SIDS, and that a monitor does not replace an adult in the room for the first six months. Nanit’s own disclaimer: not a medical device; not intended to prevent SIDS; false breathing-motion readings can happen.
In shortOver a sleeping bag: yes, on Nanit UK copy, if the Band sits under the arms and the pattern faces the camera. Over a swaddle: use Nanit’s Swaddle or the Band, not both; a conventional arm-binding swaddle does not match the Band how-to. Thick bags can block the reading. Not a TOG verdict.
Questions parents ask
- Can the Nanit band go over a Grobag?
- If it is a zip sleeping bag with free arms, Nanit UK says the Band fits over most sleeping bags. Wrap under the arms and keep the pattern visible. A very thick or quilted Grobag may hide motion — that is their thick-fabric warning, not a brand ranking.
- Can I wear the band over a swaddle?
- Nanit’s UK starter pack says use either their Swaddle or the Breathing Band, not both. A conventional swaddle that binds the arms also stops the Band sitting under the arms as their how-to requires.
- Does the band go under or over the sleeping bag?
- Over the bag (or over pyjamas), around the chest, under the arms, pattern facing the camera. Under a bag the camera cannot see the print.
- Is a visible pattern the same as safer sleep?
- No. Pattern-in-view is how Nanit’s computer vision works. Safer sleep is the Lullaby Trust’s back / clear cot / same-room rules, with or without a monitor.
